More Vegan Options Needed at UW-Stevens Point Dining Halls

There are almost no food options for those with vegan or vegetarian diets. All of the vegan options that are available are mostly just side dishes and nothing that makes a complete meal. At Upper Debot, there used to be multiple pasta options. For example, when they would have pasta like cheese tortellini on the menu, there would be another style of pasta that wouldn't have cheese. Also most of the time, there is meat or dairy in the sauces. Last year, they offered plant-based meat substitutes for Earth Week, specifically Earth Day. This was one day out of the whole school year. Having more plant-based meals or plant-based meats should be an option for the whole school year. Also, NetNutrition should be accurate and match what is actually served. People with dietary restrictions, not just vegans and vegetarians, will look at NetNutrition to make sure they can eat something, then get to Upper Debot just to see that the options that are available don't match up to what was listed online. It is completely unfair to anyone to be told dining is offering something, just to pay for a meal and not be able to eat anything because it was inaccurate. With Lower Debot, I can tell they are trying to offer more vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options, but there are still problems. With the salads that are made to order, you are not able to take off any kinds of meats or substitute the dressings for something without dairy. If you can take items off of the sandwiches that are made to order at the same station, why can't you do the same for the salads? Also, all of the convenience items at Lower that are vegan and allergen-friendly are so much more expensive than anything else. Why is it okay to force students to have a meal plan when living on campus if there are no dining options available to anyone with any kind of dietary restriction? I have a few friends who are vegan who are forced to go off-campus and buy food with their own money and let their meal plans go to waste because dining won't do anything to accommodate for those who don't eat animal products. Dining and Summer Conference also will not listen to student concerns. Students for years have been emailing dining to let them know of the problems with the lack of vegan-friendly options and have been ignored time after time. You would think that dining would want to change to make their students happy right? Having more vegan and vegetarian-friendly options though dining would change the lives of so many students who either have to eat vegan due to health problems, to the students who want to eat vegan because they prefer to. People shouldn't have to go hungry or cry over meals because there are no options for them to eat.
