Make J Term Accessible for EVERY student
The Issue
UVA is offering J term courses for free (limitations included) to UVA students. Fourth year sign up was today (November 9th) and the majority of courses are filled already. Third year, second year and first year students will not have the opportunity to take courses. UVA advertised free J-term courses as a way to take a lighter load in the 2020-2021 academic calendar. This means that there are students who were banking on taking J-term courses (for general requirements, major requirements, etc) who will not be able to take them.
This is ridiculous and immensely disappointing for the majority of the UVA student body. Third, second, and first years are paying the same amount for fall tuition as fourth years but do not have the same opportunity as fourth years to select courses for J-term. UVA needed to expect that there would be an increased number of students seeking J-term courses and failed to match that need. This needs to be remedied as soon as possible. This is immensely disappointing for the majority of the UVA student body.
These courses are online (no physical space limitations) so the limited number of spots available in these courses can and should also be remedied.
Please share this to get the attention of UVA faculty and administration.
