I am a retired doctor, and throughout my career, I have witnessed the distressing scenes of patients lining Accident & Emergency Department corridors, often deprived of the immediate care they urgently require due to the sheer lack of available hospital beds. The ripple effect of this crisis is profound, with planned surgeries being consistently postponed or cancelled. The root of this blockage often lies with medically fit patients occupying beds because they are waiting for appropriate social care packages or home modifications. This situation creates a bottleneck within our healthcare system that is entirely preventable.

Imagine an alternative where these patients, only requiring a place to stay while they arrange the necessary care measures, could be temporarily accommodated in local hotels. Doing so would alleviate the pressure on hospitals, freeing up beds for those in dire need of medical attention. Furthermore, it would afford medically fit patients the comfort and dignity of recuperating in a more private setting during their transitional phase.

The idea is simple: partner with vetted hotels to utilise space for patients cleared by medical professionals yet waiting for social services or modification of their homes. This is not only a viable humanitarian solution but also an economically sound one that could mitigate costs associated with prolonged hospital stays, reduce the burden on the NHS, and help deliver more timely medical procedures.

Notably, such initiatives have been proposed and even piloted in parts of Europe with promising outcomes. For instance, the ‘Care Hotel’ model in the Netherlands, where hotels are being utilized for transitional care, has proven successful and beneficial for both patients and healthcare providers. If we adopt a similar model, it is imperative that we involve thorough vetting processes for participating hotels, ensuring these accommodations adhere to the highest health and safety standards.
