In 1992, a majority of voters in Utica, NY approved term limits of 8 years for all elected officials. For the next 25 years, the will of the people was respected and these limits were observed. Then, in 2017, the Utica Common Council overrode the decision made by the voters. They extended term limits to 12 years so that the Mayor, Comptroller, and Common Council President can now serve three terms and Common Council members can serve 6 terms. 

It's way past time to respect the decision of the voters and return to 8-year term limits for all elected officials in Utica. This action will restore confidence in municipal governance and acknowledge the will of the people.  I care because too often the Utica Common Council has overridden referendums, including police residency requirements and re-paving of city streets. This is our city and the Utica Common Council should respect our wishes.
