Fix the Air Pollution along the Wasatch Front

The Issue

Every winter along the Wasatch Front, a strange climate phenomenon happens, cold stagnant air  gets trapped in the valley by a thermal cap of warm air trapping pollution in those valleys for days and even weeks on end.  PM2.5 levels consistently reach into the 50's, which is well into the unhealthy range especially for sensitive groups who have asthma or other breathing problems. Salt Lake City, Provo, and Logan, Utah consistently rank in the top 10 cities for air pollution. Up to 8% of all deaths can be attributed to air pollution.  This amounts to about 1000 deaths along the Wasatch Front, annually. Air pollution has been known to increase the incidence of SIDS, low birth weight, premature birth, and infant mortality. Air pollution is shortening the lives of Wasatch Front residents by as much as 2 years. Every Red air quality day (PM2.5 above 55.5) is equivalent of smoking half a pack of cigarettes (the 2013-2014 winter had 22 red air days). And yet, the Utah State Legislature seem to be sitting on their hands.  They talk about solutions that will start to clear the air in the year 2020.  But I believe that there is something that can start to clear the air today. 55% of the air pollution caused during the winter months comes from the tail pipes of vehicles.  By simply taking the cars of the streets during the winter months, we could, theoretically, cut the wintertime air pollution in half.  But with gas prices so low and the cost of public transit relatively high, people are not willing to park their cars. My solution to this is simple.  Offer free public transit to everyone along the Wasatch front when air quality rises into the unhealthy for sensitive groups range (PM2.5 above 35.5). Sign this petition and tell the Utah Legislature and Governor that free public transportation needs to happen on Orange air days and above.
