University of South Florida's "Academic Stimulus Package" (COVID-19)

The Issue

In the midst a pandemic, it is important to put health first, for all. Like most institutions, the University of South Florida (USF) has switched to online learning to promotes the implementations of avoiding social gatherings because of COVID-19. As of now, the accessibility of on campus computers are limited due to COVID-19. Although online learning is a temporary solution to this growing problem, it cannot be the ultimate decision determined by the University. With 38% of students relying on the Pell Grant to fund their education, having completely online courses would be irresponsible of the university to continue with, especially for those in low-income socioeconomic spheres. Considering that essential resources are not certain in these stressful times, putting the responsibility of online classes onto students, especially those who did not opt-into this choice in the first place, is not acceptable.

Here's some of the many issues that could arise due to the uncertainty of the situation present and using an online alternative:

Personal Experiences Due to COVID-19: (1)It cannot be stressed enough that internet access is the most essential issue with switching over fully online. Some students may not have fully function technology, or none at all.(2)Unstable living environments, (3)different time zones  associated with due dates which can cause ongoing confusion, and (4) being responsible for family members/children are also important factors that can inhibit a student at the University of South Florida's full potential, especially this semester. **Prioritizing your health and keeping connected with news updates should be everyone's top priority, not the continuation of schooling.**

In most classes, online learning is almost incomparable to the face-to-face experience. Students involved in languages, sciences, mathematics’, arts, and other very important subjects purposely chose the face-to-face experience to align with their learning style. Although switching over to online was convenient to the institution, it did not listen to the students.

The pandemic is having a global negative effect on the mental health of students. There are Universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (located in their Rules and Regulations Manual, Article 2.64) they have implemented a Pass/Fail System for its students. The students of USF are NOT asking for the same system. The students of USF would like to be the first institution the nation to perform more than a "just" action. The students of USF are asking that in this time of crisis, that ALL students receive a 4.0 for the Spring 2020 semester. Not only will students not have to worry about their education getting in the way of their health and family needs, but now this will provide students with USF's own "Stimulus Package" to help maintain and improve the grades of its current students.
