Use the nickname Rainbow Warriors for all men's sports teams

The Issue

The nickname Rainbow Warriors is associated with the University of Hawaii Manoa. It has been for almost 40 years when, in 1974, the football team adopted that nickname. In fact, the school used that nickname for many years prior. In 2000, June Jones decided to drop the word Rainbow because he felt it would hamper recruiting. Has the nickname "Ducks" hampered the University of Oregon? What about "Buckeyes" hampering Ohio State? People know who the Rainbow Warriors are. By removing "Rainbow" from Warriors, the University of Hawaii is losing its unique identity, and tradition. Just who are the Warriors? You could be referring to any of the 29+ colleges that use the nickname Warriors. If you mention Cornhuskers, people know you are referring to Nebraska. If you mention Crimson Tide, people know you're talking about Alabama. If you say Sooners, that's Oklahoma, of course. Let UH athletics keep it's unique identity and tradition. Please sign this petition and pass it along if you want the University of Hawaii to be known now, and forever, as the Rainbow Warriors and the Rainbow Wahine.
