It will make a difference. The deadline for letters to the Orinda News is today. More time for the Lamorinda Weekly. news@orindaassociation.org letters@lamorindaweekly.com There is a difference between the two candidates. Jorgens supports spending Orinda tax dollars in Orinda. He has signed this petition and he stood with me and MOFD Director Steve Anderson in front of the MOFD Finance Committee asking them to address the issue. Smith says that any excess funds should go to pay down the pension underfunding even though all of those funds will be coming from Orinda taxpayers and will be going to pay down Moraga’s portion of the underfunding. Jorgens is publicly endorsed by over two hundred Orinda residents. (www.VoteJorgens.com) Smith is endorsed by 32 City, Regional, State and Federal elected officials (www.VictoriaForMOFD.com) Jorgens supports Orinda’s emergency services. For Smith it appears that it may just be another rung on the political office ladder. Jorgens is supported by two of MOFD’s Directors who represent Orinda (Anderson and Barber) who have been pushing for the discussion of the issue by the MOFD Board on October 19th. Smith is being supported by the two MOFD Directors who represent Moraga (Weil and Famulener) who oppose any discussion of the issue, saying it has been decided in the past because they like the $2.5 million of support Orinda taxpayers are giving to Moraga. In addition, among Smith’s endorsers are four of the five MOFD Board Members (Wyro, Weil, Wilson and Gottfried) who were on the 2008 Board which gave Pete Nowicki his infamous, nationally publicized pension. One of them, John Wyro, is returning the endorsement he received from Smith in 2010 which included letters to the editor by her saying Wyro was “fiscally prudent and extremely experienced” (he built up a $75 million retirement benefit deficit during his tenure). It appears that Smith may be more interested in political expediency than worrying about who her role models are. Further comments on Jorgens and Smith’s qualifications can be found on the Task Force Web site (www.OrindaTaskForce.org) and the candidate’s websites. Please consider submitting some letters.
