Jenny Pierce started this petition to Organisation for the Prohibiton of Chemical Weapons OPWC and

A message from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez via Instagram on June 3, 2020, “Tear gas is a chemical banned in war and has no business being used by enforcement in the United States (or anywhere)”.

Additionally from OurTime.org, “Tear gas has been classified as a chemical weapon and banned in international conflict since 1993. Why is its use allowed by U.S. police forces?” The reason why is a technicality. Tear gas is allowed because it is considered a “riot control agent.”

It is NOT meant to be an offensive weapon but rather a defense tool. From Vox.com, “Indeed, tear gas is deemed a “riot control agent,” which exempts it from chemical weapons protocols — meaning it can still be used on a city street by domestic police forces, but not by soldiers in a war zone. It is considered a “less lethal” weapon, meaning it’s not intended to be fatal, but it can, and often does, inflict injury, though how severe often depends on how it’s used, and when, and where”.

What we’re seeing now across the USA, is advancements in the way the gases are deployed. Increased speed and deployment devices make utilization of tear gas more and more dangerous for individuals who have the right to assemble!

Additionally, new gases are constantly being formulated therefore, the toxicity level of tear gas and long term health risks are not fully known. How is this legal? Why aren’t police departments being held accountable for how and what chemical compound they are spraying (sometimes directly in the face) of protestors?

When tear gas was introduced in the 1920s it was advertised with lines like, “MAKE A MOB TERRIFIED AND CRY SCREAMING.”

We are petitioning against the use of tear gas on protestors. TEAR GAS IS A CHEMICAL WEAPON! Not only is it dangerous physically in terms of contact injury, it is also toxic, traumatic mentally, and dispensing tear gas is terrible for public health. We are calling for change! Tear gas is inhumane!
