But now, at the very moment when the wine, restaurant, and hospitality industries are reeling from the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, and citizens nationwide are facing unprecedented economic hardship, the government is ONCE AGAIN strongly considering expanding tariffs on all wines from the European Union up to 100%. Officials cite a lack of progress in negotiating a settlement for the underlying issue: an ongoing, 15-year trade dispute between the European Union and the U.S. involving the large aircraft industry that has NOTHING to do with wine.
The imposition of additional tariffs on EU wines will only exacerbate the millions of American jobs lost during the devastating crisis caused by the pandemic, and force hundreds of thousands of small businesses to close their doors. Putting American jobs and small businesses at risk is not a fair way to settle a trade dispute that has nothing to do with wine.
