Thank you for previous support in signing our petition to speak out against the unfair imposition of tariffs on European wines. As a refresher, in October 2019, the U.S. government imposed 25% punitive tariffs on wines from France, Germany, Spain and the UK, putting hundreds of thousands of American jobs at risk within the U.S.-based companies that import and sell these wines, and dramatically raising retail prices for consumers around the country. That decision was based on an ongoing, 15-year trade dispute between the European Union and the U.S. involving the large aircraft industry, and wine was simply caught in the crosshairs of this bureaucratic battle. Then, in December, the U.S. government threatened further tariffs of up to 100% on ALL European wines. Your action helped us to SAY NO to those increases, and together we were successful!

Now, at the very moment when the wine, restaurant, and hospitality industries are reeling from the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, and citizens nationwide are facing unprecedented economic hardship, the government is once again strongly considering expanding tariffs up to 100% on all wines from the European Union, citing a lack of progress in negotiating a settlement for the underlying aircraft industry dispute.

Imported EU wines support hundreds of thousands of American jobs and touch millions of American consumers. Importers, wholesalers, and retailers of wines like our neighborhood wine stores or restaurants are American companies that create jobs in our local communities.

The imposition of additional tariffs on EU wines will only exacerbate the millions of American jobs lost during the devastating crisis caused by the pandemic, and force hundreds of thousands of small businesses to close their doors. Putting American jobs and small businesses at risk is not a fair way to settle a trade dispute that has nothing to do with wine.
