How to Keep the Kids Safe While the Debate Goes On

How to Keep the Kids Safe While the Debate Goes On

The Issue

Each time there is a shooting in one of our schools, people cry, people grieve, people demand action and Congress starts debating, AGAIN.  But nothing gets done because it gets mired in 2nd Amendment rights, lobbying, NRA, congressional and presidential contributions, etc.  Unfortunately, this is SOP.  Even more unfortunate is the fact that our kids remain exposed to further shootings making each daily trip to school an exercise in danger.  Outside of what we do during our elections, we feel powerless to push the debate and possible solutions.  We can't change that process...but there is something that can be done to protect the kids, and it can be done immediately.  We can call out the National Guard.  The National Guard can be called out immediately by the President and/or by the Governors of each state.  The National Guard can be used to protect citizens in time of emergency.  Shooters in our schools randomly killing children is the very definition of an emergency.

Several states have found money in their budgets to place armed officers in their schools to protect their students. While this certainly is an answer, it takes desperately needed funds from the education of the students enrolled. It's a type of Catch-22.  We can educate our students or we can make sure they live to get that education.  That shouldn't have to be a choice.

When Israel had a problem with school shootings, it placed an armed military guard at the door of each and every school in the country and the shootings stopped cold. In several counties in Florida, schools are putting armed security guards into their school budgets. We all know what we have to do to keep the kids safe.

But there is nothing formal being done on a national basis to protect the kids and there is armed help already in place that we should be using.  We call upon the President, joined with the Governors of all 50 States, to declare our school shootings an emergency and call out the National Guard to protect our children.  Once that's been done, debate away.
