Bringing An End To Companion Animal Cruelty

With the ever growing number cases of malnourished, neglected, and abused animals have been reported with minimal punishment given to the perpetrators. Instead of deterring people who commit animal abuse, lenient sentences allow them to become repeat offenders with little to no consequence for their actions. Because these animals cannot stand up for themselves, they need us to protect them from harm.
To reduce incidents of torture, malnourished, and neglect, enforce laws restricting convicted animal abusers of owning more animals. People convicted of beating or starving animals have no respect for life. Paying a fine or small imprisonment sentences is not enough to deter a dog fighter from engaging in further brutality against canines or someone that neglects a animal, abuses animals or any other unjust treatment of animals.
People who commit these crimes against other people are incarcerated for years, sometimes decades. Animals deserve no less respect simply because our laws do not protect them in the same fashion. Ignoring animal cruelty only encourages abusive people to commit further aggression against animals. Show the world that we will not tolerate such inhumane brutality.
How long can we continue to allow this to happen. Recent events include a cat being hung from a tree and beaten until he had blood coming from his mouth and ears and broken bones and another cat was neglected due to the owners getting a new piece of furniture.
I, the undersigned American citizen, believe that animals, like all sentient beings, are entitled to basic legal rights in our society. Lacking legal protection, animals are defenseless and voiceless against treatment or acts against them by humans. I urge you to pass legislation in support of the following basic rights for animals:
The Right of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect, and abuse.
The Right of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care.
The Right of animals to have their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the United States.
