Add African Lions and Elephants to the Endangered Species Act

The Issue

Throughout the centuries, mankind has learned to survive through trial and error. We have had many obstacles, but as a nation succeeded. I believe certain decisions and interventions have made our nation a God fearing, loving, safe, and fortunate country. However, one thing keeps us from setting an example and providing guidance to our fellow countries--killing endangered species as trophies. Countries worldwide are beginning to notice the detrimental effect that Trophy Hunting is having on our wildlife population. Why are we allowing our citizens to travel to foreign countries simply to slay innocent animals as trophies? Currently, African Lions and African Elephants are not on the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Which means that American Citizens can travel to certain parts of Africa, slay an elephant or lion, and bring it back with them to hang on their wall. This addition would prohibit the importation of lion and elephant trophies into the United States. We can't stop Trophy Hunting worldwide, but we can help preserve the world's wildlife one step at a time.

Zambia's Minister of "Tourism and Arts", Sylvia T. Masebo has suspended hunter's licenses if they abuse it, because it is affecting the wildlife population. Now, Zambian government has banned the hunting of lions and leopards. Botswana took a similar stance and banned country-wide sport hunting. Kenya, who has banned trophy hunting since 1977, strongly stands their ground in defending their wildlife by stating that trophy hunting is, "a barbaric relic of colonialism.”

Today, fewer than 30,000 lions remain in Africa in about 25% of the species’ original range. In West Africa, the lion now survives in less than 50,000 km - smaller than half the size of New York State - and only 1% of its original historic range in the region. Beginning in the 1980's, 100, 000 elephants were killed each year for either trophies or by poachers.

"There will be no justice as long as man will stand with a knife or with a gun and destroy those who are weaker than he is." ~Isaac Bashevis Singer

Please sign my petition and help save the innocent lives of the African Lions and Elephants that trophy hunters and poachers are taking everyday.
