As a young woman preparing to face the world, the lack of respect for women in the work-force terrifies and outrages me. For decades, women have been an integral part of society, all the way from risking their lives to create machinery and weapons used by men in WW1 to carrying weapons on their backs across battlefields to protect their families and thousands of others. Strong, courageous, and brilliant women all over the world put in countless hours of work behind office desks, in emergency rooms, teaching in classrooms, studying science in labs, debating in the Senate, and so much more. However, when the day comes, women are forced to face the ultimate battle: maintaining a job while pregnant.

In the United States, nearly three-fourths of women in the labor force will become pregnant at some point during their careers. With 87 percent of women working up into the ninth month of pregnancy, most first-time moms will continue on the job right until their water breaks. For a large amount of these women, the choice is not truly a choice but more so an economic necessity. In 40 percent of families with children, working moms are the ones bringing home the bacon.

Many people believe that women are protected under the federal Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), but if you read between the lines, there are many ways for companies and individuals to avoid treating women fairly. For one, the FMLA simply requires companies to allow twelve weeks off for maternity, without pay. If a business has less than 50 employees though, the act no longer applies, which means no mandatory time off at all. Shockingly enough, the US is the only developed nation in the world that does not provide paid maternity leave. With an increasing mortality rate, you would think our government would want mothers to have the money necessary to raise a healthy child.

Soon-to-be mothers are fired for many different reasons including requesting permission to sit during a long shift, asking for extra restroom breaks, or needing temporary relief from heavy lifting to avoid any complications during the pregnancy. Although companies make dozens of excuses for their choice of termination, it is unmistakably clear that women are discriminated against for being pregnant.

The inequality present in the labor force is disturbing and there needs to be a change. This petition is designed to take a step towards that change by fighting to give women PAID maternity leave no matter the circumstance.
