MAKE AR 670-1/ HAIR STANDARDS EQUAL FOR ALL SERVICE MEMBERS
MAKE AR 670-1/ HAIR STANDARDS EQUAL FOR ALL SERVICE MEMBERS
The Issue
The standards for the wear and appearance of male’s hair in the military have not be re-evaluated in a tremendous amount of time. One of the military’s traditions even involves males getting their heads shaved completely bald upon arriving to basic training. After this, they are allowed to grow their hair within the standards of AR 670-1. One of the biggest reasons for keeping this standard is “professionalism.” Why is the appearance of professionalism mean that African American male soldiers are not allowed to grow their hair past a certain length while male soldiers of over races and nationalities are able to wear their hair in faddish styles? African American males are constantly told by their leadership that their hair is unprofessional. How is it that their natural hair texture deemed unprofessional? The hair standards for soldiers both males and female, regardless of race should be consistent (the exact same). These standards should be re-evaluated, and changed so that every soldier’s hair length and texture is taken into consideration in AR 670-1.
