Urging Your Legislator to Vote NO on Senate Bill 289, (an effort to end DEI in Indiana)

The Issue

Republican lawmakers in Indiana have proposed a bill that would stifle Diversity; Equity; and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the state. SB 289 has already passed in the Indiana State Senate and is now inching closer to becoming law. If passed, this bill would reverse diversity, equity, and inclusion polices in Indiana by eliminating DEI offices in state agencies and schools, and potentially affect how teachers are allowed to teach certain topics.

In a state with a deep-rooted history of racial discrimination, we cannot allow the progress we have made to be upended. DEI offices were created because of the need to ensure people of color and other marginalized groups were given equal opportunities and were treated with fairness and respect. We know that while headway has been made on these fronts, the fight still continues to this day.

DEI offices and practices do not exist to discriminate or anoint one group of people over another. They are a vital tool in safeguarding the voices and experiences of people of color and other vulnerable groups.

Teaching school children the history of discrimination and biases in our country is essential to fostering an informed citizenry. The language of SB 289, while not outlawing discussion on these topics in the classroom, will create an environment where teachers do not feel comfortable giving their students the full story.

The Indiana House of Representatives must vote NO on SB 289. Governor Mike Braun has already signed an executive order ending some state DEI policies. If this bill makes it to his desk, it will almost certainly become law. State Representatives need to hear your voice about this issue.

Stand with the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus (IBLC) and sign the petition to let your lawmakers know this bill does not represent Hoosier values and urge them to vote NO on SB 289.
