Recently the world watched the tragic demise of African elephant ‘Noor Jehan’ at Karachi Zoo in Pakistan. Her premature death was entirely preventable, a result of atrocious living conditions, neglect and a total absence of elephant expertise. 

‘Noor Jehan’ had been captured in Tanzania as a young calf and along with 3 others of a similar age was shipped to Pakistan in 2009.

The 4 young calves were then separated, 2 Sonu (now Sonia) and Malika remained at Karachi Safari Park whilst MadhuBala and Noor Jehan were sent to Karachi Zoo. Both facilities being equally dreadful.

For the last fourteen years all four elephants have been kept in appalling species inappropriate conditions and deprived of the ability to carry out almost all natural behaviours. Predictably this has led to a myriad of health issues with each of the elephants ranging from foot rot to tusk issues and culminating in the death of ‘Noor Jehan’ at just 17 years old.

This is what an elephant expert from Pro Elephant Network (PREN) had to say about the conditions for elephants in Karachi: - 

  “I can say this is one of the worst facilities with the worst type of care giving I have seen to date. The elephants must immediately be given the proper medical and psychological attention and care and then released as soon as possible into a sanctuary where they can recover mentally and psychologically and start to lead a dignified life as elephant with other elephants.”

There can be no doubt that all four elephants are suffering enormously both mentally and physically and that the conditions under which they are kept represent a threat to life!

Pakistan has proven time and time again that it has neither the resources, the expertise nor the will to afford adequate care to elephants and yet surprisingly against this backdrop of neglect in 2020 Pakistan's Chief Justice Athar Minhallah made a ground breaking ruling to release another suffering elephant ‘Kaavan’ at Islamabad Zoo to sanctuary and afforded him non human rights!

We now URGENTLY call on the Karachi and Pakistani authorities to once more show compassion, to shine a positive light once again on the nation of Pakistan by sending the three remaining Karachi elephants to a place of sanctuary?

حال ہی میں پاکستان کے کراچی چڑیا گھر میں افریقی ہاتھی 'نور جہاں' کی المناک موت کو دنیا نے دیکھا۔ اس کی قبل از وقت موت کو مکمل طور پر روکا جا سکتا تھا، جو کہ زندگی کے ناخوشگوار حالات، غفلت اور ہاتھی کی مہارت کی مکمل عدم موجودگی کا نتیجہ تھا۔

’نور جہاں‘ کو تنزانیہ میں بچھڑے کے طور پر پکڑا گیا تھا اور اسی عمر کے 3 دیگر افراد کے ساتھ 2009 میں پاکستان بھیج دیا گیا تھا۔

اس کے بعد 4 چھوٹے بچھڑوں کو الگ کر دیا گیا، 2 سونو (اب سونیا) اور ملائکہ کراچی سفاری پارک میں رہے جب کہ مدھو بالا اور نور جہاں کو کراچی چڑیا گھر بھیج دیا گیا۔ دونوں سہولیات یکساں خوفناک ہیں۔

پچھلے چودہ سالوں سے چاروں ہاتھیوں کو خوفناک انواع کے نامناسب حالات میں رکھا گیا ہے اور وہ تقریباً تمام قدرتی رویے کو انجام دینے کی صلاحیت سے محروم ہیں۔ ممکنہ طور پر اس کی وجہ سے ہر ایک ہاتھی کے ساتھ صحت کے بے شمار مسائل پیدا ہوئے ہیں جن میں پاؤں کی سڑن سے لے کر دانت کے مسائل شامل ہیں اور یہ صرف 17 سال کی عمر میں نور جہاں کی موت پر منتج ہے۔

یہ بات Pro Elephant Network (PREN) کے ہاتھیوں کے ماہر کا کراچی میں ہاتھیوں کے حالات کے بارے میں کہنا ہے:-

"میں کہہ سکتا ہوں کہ یہ بدترین سہولیات میں سے ایک ہے جس کی دیکھ بھال کی بدترین قسم میں نے آج تک دیکھی ہے۔ ہاتھیوں کو فوری طور پر مناسب طبی اور نفسیاتی توجہ اور دیکھ بھال فراہم کی جانی چاہیے اور پھر جلد از جلد کسی پناہ گاہ میں چھوڑ دیا جانا چاہیے جہاں وہ ذہنی اور نفسیاتی طور پر صحت یاب ہو کر دوسرے ہاتھیوں کے ساتھ ہاتھی کی طرح باوقار زندگی گزارنا شروع کر دیں۔

وسائل ہیں، نہ مہارت اور نہ ہی خواہش اور پھر بھی حیرت انگیز طور پر 2020 میں نظر انداز کیے جانے کے اس پس منظر میں پاکستان کے چیف جسٹس اطہر من اللہ نے ایک اور مصیبت زدہ ہاتھی کو رہا کرنے کا فیصلہ سنایا۔ اسلام آباد کے چڑیا گھر میں 'کاون' کو پناہ دینے کے لیے اور اسے غیر انسانی حقوق فراہم کیے! پاکستان نے بار بار ثابت کیا ہے کہ اس کے پاس ہاتھیوں کی مناسب دیکھ بھال کرنے کے لیے نہاب ہم کراچی اور پاکستانی حکام سے فوری طور پر مطالبہ کرتے ہیں کہ وہ ایک بار پھر ہمدردی کا مظاہرہ کریں، کراچی کے باقی تین ہاتھیوں کو ایک محفوظ مقام پر بھیج کر پاکستانی قوم پر ایک بار پھر مثبت روشنی ڈالیں۔
