Urgently Improve Safety at Kidbrooke Park Road Pedestrian Crossings Near Pegler Square
The Issue
Residents and visitors of Kidbrooke Village in Greenwich are imperiled by a problematic road design at the Kidbrooke Park Road Pedestrian Crossing near the Pegler Square Junction. Since moving here in 2020, I've witnessed at least 3 to 5 fatal incidents at this crossing. The problem arises from a complex mix of many risk factors:
- The overall dangerous shape and location of this road as a 30mph zone following a sharp turn from a 50mph road, making it difficult for drivers to decelerate in time.
- The ongoing construction of high-rise apartments nearby further obstructs drivers' views, exacerbating the risk.
- The inconsiderate layout and design of the lanes in the specific 150m between Cottam House and Larkin House, where the single lane unnecessarily turns into two lanes, which only last for about 80m, before it abruptly converges back into a single lane again (same for both directions), causing a lot of disruption and confusion to drivers, especially compounding with the co-location with the crossing and traffic lights.
- The flawed traffic light system makes vehicles from Pegler Square often invisible to pedestrians, and misplaced lights confuse drivers in heavy traffic.
- The road is alarmingly close to Cator Park Playground, a popular gathering spot for children, families, and dog walkers.
Immediate action is essential. This faulty design places the lives of children, families, and commuters at unnecessary risk. Failing to act implies a grim acceptance of preventable tragedies, while timely intervention can protect lives and substantially improve the quality of life for all residents.
Based on valuable feedback from concerned residents, we propose the following concrete measures:
- Consider making Kidbrooke Park Road a 20mph zone.
- Add “School Children Crossing” road signs near the turn to warn drivers ahead.
- Re-design the lanes for the 150m part between Cottam House and Larkin House. Remove the unnecessary divergence from single lane to two lanes in order to increase the size of the pedestrian islands.
- Change the timing of the crossing lights to allow for full pedestrian crossing, stopping cars in all directions for a sufficient amount of time.
- Install a speed camera near or after the turn to alert drivers sooner, helping them decelerate.
- Explore the possibility of redesigning the road layout, which could involve adding a pedestrian bridge over the road or even more drastic redevelopment to ease the turn and improve drivers' sightlines.
The urgency for change is palpable. The escalating frequency of severe accidents signals that this is a systemic issue needing immediate attention. Delaying action risks more devastating accidents that could claim lives or result in irreversible injuries. There is no better time to act than now.
