URGENT--TAKE ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE!

The House of Representatives will vote in a matter of
days--possibly as soon as this week--on landmark legislation to tackle climate change, jumpstart our economy and begin building America’s clean energy future.

ACT NOW: Urge your member of Congress to support and strengthen the American Clean Energy and Security Act!

Dear WWF Activist,

We need your help in urging Congress to strengthen and pass critical legislation that will slow climate change while laying the foundation for our new clean energy economy. As soon as this week, the House of Representatives may vote on the American Clean Energy and Security Act.

The urgency for passing this legislation is clearly articulated in a groundbreaking new report, released last week by the White House, showing conclusively that climate change is already altering the landscape of America and causing significant and dangerous impacts in every region of our country.

The evidence of climate change is all around us. Wildfires are increasing. Sea levels are rising. Droughts are intensifying. Floods are become more common and more severe. Temperatures are getting hotter. The very character of the states and cities we call home is changing.

By the middle of this century, some areas of the U.S. may no longer be able to produce apples and maple syrup. New Hampshire’s climate may more closely resemble that of North Carolina. The East Coast could experience up to four feet of sea level rise, placing huge swaths of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic seaboard under water. Beetle infestations could destroy much of the forest cover from Colorado to Montana. Growing crops and raising cattle will become much more challenging in many places. Heat waves and disease outbreaks will claim the lives of many Americans.

The report eliminates any speculation as to the severity and urgency of the climate crisis. It clearly illustrates the enormous--potentially catastrophic--costs of inaction.

The good news, though, is we can avoid the most severe consequences forecast in the report if we begin taking action now. By passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act, Congress will take an important first step to protect our nation from further damage from climate change, while at the same time putting America on the path toward a cleaner, safer, more secure and more prosperous future. The transition to a clean energy economy will put America back to work building wind turbines, solar panels, and energy efficient vehicles. We’ll create new exports and make our nation less dependent on the dirty, imported fuels that are destroying our planet. And we will help ensure a safe future for our children and grandchildren.

Contact your representative and urge him or her to work to support and strengthen the American Clean Energy and Security Act.

Tell your member of Congress that you are concerned about the climate change impacts we are already experiencing and ask them how they plan to address this crisis. I urge you to examin the new climate impacts report for yourself. It includes a short summary for each region of the county that describes the impacts in layman’s terms. WWF has also created an interactive map that highlights the observed impacts in each region.

The vote on the American Clean Energy and Security Act is likely to be extremely close. Your representative's vote is critical in determining whether or not Congress acts on climate change legislation this year.

Please urge your member of Congress to vote YES on the American Clean Energy and Security Act.

You have a critical role to play in ensuring Congress acts to address the climate crisis. I thank you for your continued support and dedication to this important cause.

Sincerely,
