Urgent Restrictions and Monitoring on Snapchat and TikTok

The Issue

My teenage daughter is a direct victim of vicious online bullying, a situation that many parents worldwide face today.
Platforms like Snapchat allow messages to vanish, making protecting vulnerable adolescents an overwhelming and difficult task. As parents we are stuck between adding to the ostracism with complete removal and potentially compounding the alienation and impact on self-esteem and struggling to protect from “disappearing” messages which constantly flood in.
The platform functionalities make these spaces all the more vulnerable- for example- bullies see if you try to record or keep a record thus compounding further.
There is NO accountability on these platforms and no support. There is no supervision or monitoring.

It not as simple as just ”deleting” as not allowing the platforms comes with its own host of problems.

Parents are struggling to manage and  long-term detrimental impact on these young minds and the fallout which equates to severely worsened mental health and often even tragic loss of lives. The statistics prove this and it is growing rapidly.

Social media platforms, especially Snapchat and TikTok, have become powerful forces shaping our youth's lives. Unfortunately, they are also turning into platforms for cyber-bullying, negatively affecting our children's mental health. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, nearly 59% of U.S. teens have been bullied or harassed online.

This is not the environment we want our children to grow up in, where they live under perpetual fear and pressure.

Our plea is simple. We demand that Snapchat and TikTok, among other social media platforms, establish strong restrictions and regular monitoring to curb this rising tide of online bullying. Their operation strategy needs to evolve and prioritise safety over ephemeral content, ensuring that they invest in robust technology to help eliminate online bullying.

Our children's mental health and proper growth are at stake, and we cannot stand idle anymore.

We call on legislators, technology companies, and individuals to join us in this fight against cyber-bullying. Sign this petition and make a difference. It is time to safeguard our children's virtual interactions and create a safe and nurturing digital environment.
