Urgent Request to Restore and Maintain CEB Public EV Charging Infrastructure Across Sri La

Urgent Request to Restore and Maintain CEB Public EV Charging Infrastructure Across Sri La
The Issue
Hon. Minister of Power and Energy,
President - Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB),
Secretary to the President - Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
We, the undersigned citizens and electric vehicle (EV) users of Sri Lanka, would like to express our deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of the public EV charging network managed by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). As the country moves toward sustainable transportation and energy independence, the current neglect of EV charging infrastructure is a significant setback to progress.
Many CEB-operated charging stations across the island are non-functional or poorly maintained. These public charging points are essential for many EV owners, especially those who cannot install home chargers. Unfortunately, the lack of maintenance and service reliability has forced many to abandon public stations.
In contrast, privately operated chargers such as those provided by retail chains like Keells are considerably cheaper. CEB's charging rates are far more affordable and equitable for the average Sri Lankan. However, affordability becomes irrelevant if the stations are unusable. We respectfully urge you to take immediate and meaningful action on the following:
1. Conduct a nationwide audit of all CEB-managed EV charging stations to assess their operational status.
2. Allocate funding and resources for urgent repairs and routine maintenance.
3. Introduce a public reporting and monitoring mechanism, allowing users to flag broken chargers in real-time.
4. Publicly communicate a roadmap for developing and expanding EV infrastructure under government leadership.
Sri Lanka has the potential to lead in clean transportation within South Asia. However, without reliable public infrastructure, the adoption of EVS will remain limited to those with private charging facilities. This not only widens the accessibility gap but also undermines our national sustainability goals.
This appeal also aligns strongly with the government's ongoing 'Clean Sri Lanka' initiative to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility nationwide.
We hope your leadership will recognise the urgency of this issue and take swift action to address it. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
Respectfully
Dasun Edirisinghe
