Urgent Request for Gas Tax Relief Amidst Oil Crisis

Urgent Request for Gas Tax Relief Amidst Oil Crisis
The Issue
To The Honorable Governor Pritzker,
We are writing to you today as concerned residents of Illinois to urgently request that you take executive or legislative action to lower the state motor fuel tax. With the current oil crisis driving gas prices to unsustainable levels, Illinois families and small businesses are facing a severe financial breaking point.
As you are aware, Illinois currently maintains one of the highest gas tax rates in the nation. While We understand that these funds are earmarked for the "Rebuild Illinois" infrastructure program, the current economic reality has made the "automatic" annual tax increases unsustainable for the average citizen. When the price at the pump skyrockets due to global supply issues, the additional burden of a nearly $0.50 per gallon state tax—on top of local sales taxes—acts as a regressive penalty on those who can least afford it.
Specifically, We are asking your administration to:
Suspend the Automatic Annual Increase: Halt the scheduled CPI-based tax hike set for July 1st.
Implement a Temporary Tax Holiday: Provide immediate relief by temporarily reducing the state motor fuel tax until global oil markets stabilize.
Address the "Tax-on-Tax" Structure: Reform the practice of applying state sales tax on top of the motor fuel tax, which leads to Illinoisans paying more than our neighbors in Missouri and Indiana.
Hardworking Illinoisans rely on their vehicles for commuting to work, taking children to school, and maintaining their livelihoods. At a time when the cost of groceries and utilities is also rising, we cannot afford to be the nation's leader in fuel taxation.
We urge you to prioritize the immediate financial stability of your constituents over long-term capital projects until this crisis abates. We need relief, and we need it now.
Thank you for your time and for your service to the people of Illinois. We look forward to hearing how your office plans to address this critical issue.
Sincerely,
The Tax Payers of Illinois
