Urgent Removal of the Deceased Whale at 13th Beach for Public and Environmental Safety

The issue

We, the undersigned, respectfully request the urgent removal of the deceased whale currently located at 13th Beach. While we acknowledge the natural processes of marine life, the presence of this whale poses significant risks to our community and the broader ecosystem. The longer the whale remains, the greater the detrimental impact on the local area in the lead-up to the vital summer period.

Here are the key reasons for this petition:

Due to the presence of the deceased whale at 13th Beach, the local beaches have been officially closed, and Surf Life Saving operations are not due to start until November 9.

Without the presence of Surf Life Saving the safety of beachgoers cannot be ensured, and this has already led to the suspension of regular activities on the beaches.

The longer the whale remains in place, the greater the risk to public safety, and the longer these important community services will remain inactive.

Health and Well-being of the Local Community: Ocean Grove and 13th Beach is a cherished spot for surfers, swimmers, and families who rely on the ocean for recreation, physical activity, and mental health. With the beach now posing a heightened risk due to shark activity drawn to the carcass, many are unable to engage in their usual activities.
Shark sightings have increased in the area and local surfers have already encountered bumps whilst surfing.

For many, surfing and beach access are critical outlets for stress relief and mental well-being. The prolonged closure of this area would negatively impact the mental health of local residents and visitors alike.

Economic Impact on Local Businesses: Ocean Grove/ Barwon Heads local beaches are a key attraction for tourists, holidaymakers, and beachgoers. Local businesses, including surf schools, cafes, shops, and accommodation providers, heavily rely on the consistent flow of tourism.

With increased shark activity and beach closures lasting for up to three months while the whale decomposes, businesses are likely to suffer from significant financial losses during what should be the peak summer season. These effects will ripple through our economy, jeopardizing livelihoods in the region.

Disruption to Community Groups and Organizations: Many community groups, including surf clubs, surf life saving clubs, ocean wellness, and ocean conservation programs, utilize 13th Beach and Ocean Grove for their activities. The presence of the whale and the associated shark risk prevents these groups from accessing this vital space. This disruption will not only hinder their programs but also weaken the social bonds that these groups foster within the community.

Shark Activity and Marine Safety Concerns: The presence of a whale carcass in the ocean can attract increased shark activity to the area, altering their patterns and posing a significant risk to beach users. This heightened danger is expected to last for several months, creating a long-term safety concern for residents and visitors alike.

As we approach the summer season, which is vital for tourism, the increased shark presence could cause an extended closure of 13th Beach and Ocean Grove, damaging the region's reputation as a safe and family-friendly destination.

Given the immense social, economic, and environmental implications, we urge the relevant authorities to prioritize the swift removal of the whale to restore safety and normalcy to the surrounding community before the peak summer period in this region.

We believe that acting now will protect our community’s health and well-being, safeguard local businesses, and ensure the continued enjoyment of this treasured natural resource for all.
