Urgent Regulation Needed for the U.K. Aesthetics Industry to Prevent Further Tragedies

Urgent Regulation Needed for the U.K. Aesthetics Industry to Prevent Further Tragedies
The Issue
The aesthetics industry in the U.K. is growing rapidly, but it remains dangerously unregulated. Thousands of people are undergoing high-risk procedures, often performed by unqualified practitioners in non-clinical, non-sterile settings. This lack of regulation is putting lives at risk, and tragically, we have already seen the devastating consequences.
Alice Webb, a young woman with her whole life ahead of her, recently died following a “Liquid Brazilian Bum Lift” performed by a practitioner with no medical training in a beauty salon. Without proper regulation, this could happen again today. There is currently nothing in place to determine who is qualified to perform such procedures, meaning nothing is stopping unscrupulous practitioners from continuing to operate unsafely.
While aesthetic treatments are often marketed as non-invasive, many can pose significant risks and may involve the use of prescription-only medications. These procedures, such as Botox and dermal fillers, can lead to complications that require specialized management. It’s crucial for consumers to be aware that these treatments, although labeled non-invasive, can have invasive consequences and should only be performed by qualified professionals who can deal with potential complications.
There is a place in the beauty and aesthetics industry for both healthcare and non-healthcare professionals, but proper safeguards and regulations must be put in place. Over a year ago, a stakeholder consultation was conducted to propose changes that would protect the public, but despite this, no action has been taken by the government.
Thousands of people continue to suffer from unwanted side effects, complications, and injuries each year—harms that could be prevented with proper training standards and qualifications.
We are calling on the government to urgently discuss this issue in Parliament and to implement the recommendations from the October 2023 consultation. Lives are at risk, and it’s time for the government to act.
**Sign this petition** to demand better regulation of the aesthetics industry, protect vulnerable people, and ensure that only properly trained professionals are allowed to perform invasive procedures. Together, we can prevent further tragedies and safeguard the public.
