PRESERVE FRENCH CREEK! - Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota

The Issue

Let the South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the South Dakota Department of Natural Resources (SD-DANR), the South Dakota Water Board, and the City of Custer, South Dakota know that YOU DO NOT SUPPORT any discharge of sewage wastewater into the Black Hills of South Dakota’s FRENCH CREEK.

In 2020, the City of Custer, South Dakota chose FRENCH CREEK as a NEW discharge location for its treated sewage wastewater. Hunter Roberts, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, approved the City’s application and Permit in 2021 to allow the release of up to 750,000 gallons of sewage wastewater DAILY into French Creek.

Discharging wastewater into FRENCH CREEK was presented by the Custer City’s contractor as the cheapest alternative for the City and its residents. No consideration was given the potential effects on the FRENCH CREEK waters and uses, to Custer County property owners along the discharge route, to the millions of visitors to Custer State Park, or to other downstream users of FRENCH CREEK waters.

At this time, the City of Custer plans to begin discharging its sewage wastewater into FRENCH CREEK JUNE 1, 2026. JOIN us in opposing the pollution of a clean FRENCH CREEK with Custer City treated sewage wastewater by signing this Change.org petition.
