Do not Erase Name of a Great Patriot!

 

MEMORANDUM

 

TO: The Honourable Governor,

Raj Bhavan, Madhya Pradesh

 

SUBJECT: Urgent Plea to Withhold Assent on the Proposal to Rename Barkatullah University, Bhopal

 

Your Excellency,

 

We address this memorandum to you with a profound sense of civic duty, historical responsibility, and deep emotional angst regarding the proposal passed by the Bhopal University Syndicate body to change the name of Barkatullah University; Which was named after a legendary nationalist freedom fighter Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali (1864-1926). 

 

We earnestly implore your Excellency to exercise your constitutional authority to withhold assent to this proposal and preserve the legacy of a towering national icon, Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali.

 

Erasing the name of a revolutionary freedom fighter from an institution of higher learning is not merely a change of nomenclature; it is an erasure of our collective national conscience.

 

Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali was not a localized figure but a global ambassador of India’s freedom struggle. Operating from the US, Japan, and Europe, he co-founded the Ghadar Party and served as the Prime Minister of the first Provisional Government of India established in exile (Kabul, 1915) alongside Raja Mahendra Pratap.

 

For over five decades, Barkatullah University has built a global reputation under this name. Altering it creates administrative confusion, dilutes the university's historical brand, and sets a regressive precedent of retrospective political editing.

 

We cannot give Maulana Barkatullah his life back, nor can we change the fact that he died on foreign soil yearning for a free homeland. The very least a grateful nation can do is keep his memory alive in the halls of education, inspiring generations to come.

 

As the Chancellor of the Universities of Madhya Pradesh and the custodian of the Constitution, the people of the country look to you to protect our shared heritage. We humbly request you to reject the Syndicate's proposal and ensure that Bhopal University continues to proudly bear the name of Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali.

महोदय,

 

हम आपके समक्ष ये ज्ञापन हमारे नागरिक उत्तरदायित्व, ऐतिहासिक दायित्वबोध तथा गहरी व्यथा के साथ प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं। भोपाल विश्वविद्यालय की सिंडिकेट संस्था द्वारा बरकतउल्लाह विश्वविद्यालय का नाम परिवर्तित करने का जो प्रस्ताव पारित किया गया है, उसके संबंध में हम आपका ध्यान आकर्षित करना चाहते हैं। यह विश्वविद्यालय महान राष्ट्रवादी स्वतंत्रता सेनानी मौलाना बरकतउल्लाह भोपाली (1864–1926) के नाम पर स्थापित किया गया था।

 

हम आपसे विनम्रतापूर्वक आग्रह करते हैं कि आप अपने संवैधानिक अधिकार का प्रयोग करते हुए इस प्रस्ताव की स्वीकृति पर रोक लगाएं तथा राष्ट्र के इस महानायक की विरासत को संरक्षित रखें।

 

किसी क्रांतिकारी-स्वतंत्रता सेनानी का नाम उच्च शिक्षा के एक प्रतिष्ठित संस्थान से हटाना मात्र किसी नाम का परिवर्तन नहीं है, बल्कि यह हमारी सामूहिक राष्ट्रीय चेतना और ऐतिहासिक विरासत को मिटाने का प्रयास है।

 

मौलाना बरकतउल्लाह भोपाली केवल एक क्षेत्रीय व्यक्तित्व नहीं थे, बल्कि वे भारत के स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के वैश्विक प्रतिनिधि थे। उन्होंने अमेरिका, जापान और यूरोप से भारत की स्वतंत्रता के लिए संघर्ष किया, ग़दर पार्टी के सह-संस्थापकों में प्रमुख भूमिका निभाई तथा राजा महेंद्र प्रताप के साथ मिलकर 1915 में काबुल में स्थापित भारत की प्रथम निर्वासित अस्थायी सरकार (Provisional Government of India) के प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में कार्य किया।

 

पिछले पाँच दशकों से अधिक समय में बरकतउल्लाह विश्वविद्यालय ने इसी नाम से राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर अपनी विशिष्ट पहचान एवं प्रतिष्ठा स्थापित की है। इसका नाम बदलना न केवल प्रशासनिक जटिलताएँ और भ्रम उत्पन्न करेगा, बल्कि विश्वविद्यालय की ऐतिहासिक पहचान को भी कमजोर करेगा तथा अतीत को राजनीतिक दृष्टिकोण से पुनर्लेखित करने की एक अनुचित परंपरा को बढ़ावा देगा।

 

हम मौलाना बरकतउल्लाह को उनका जीवन वापस नहीं दे सकते, न ही इस तथ्य को बदल सकते हैं कि उन्होंने स्वतंत्र भारत का सपना देखते हुए विदेशी धरती पर अंतिम साँस ली। किंतु एक कृतज्ञ राष्ट्र के रूप में हम कम-से-कम इतना तो कर ही सकते हैं कि शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में उनकी स्मृति को जीवित रखें, जिससे उनका जीवन और आदर्श आने वाली पीढ़ियों को प्रेरणा देते रहें।

 

मध्य प्रदेश के विश्वविद्यालयों के कुलाधिपति तथा संविधान के संरक्षक के रूप में प्रदेश और देश के नागरिक आपसे हमारी साझा ऐतिहासिक विरासत की रक्षा की अपेक्षा रखते हैं। अतः हम आपसे विनम्रतापूर्वक निवेदन करते हैं कि सिंडिकेट के इस प्रस्ताव को अस्वीकार करें तथा यह सुनिश्चित करें कि भोपाल विश्वविद्यालय आगे भी गर्व के साथ मौलाना बरकतउल्लाह भोपाली के नाम से जाना जाता रहे।
