Urgent Petition: Accountability for Murdering Students/Civilians in Bangladesh
The Issue
Update: Although the current quota system for government jobs was reformed in favour of the protest, we seek justice for the innocent lives lost during the peaceful protest that turned violent due to the involvement of police, RAB and Chatra League (pro government student league). Officially hundreds of unarmed students and innocent bystanders were shot and killed while the number of those heavily injured remains at large. During the government-imposed curfew, protesters have also been arrested from their homes and tortured by the police. The government must hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable through a fair trial. They must provide the families of the deceased and injured monetary compensation and a public apology. The students must be protected at all costs from further investigation or harassment by local authorities.
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urgently call on the High Court to take immediate action regarding the following issues:
Our Requests:
1. Reform the current quota system for government jobs to ensure fair opportunities for all merit-based candidates.
2. Seek justice for the students who were killed by the police and Chatra League during peaceful protests.
Why This Matters:
1. Merit-Based Opportunities:
The current quota system in government jobs is depriving deserving, merit-based students of employment opportunities. This results in many qualified individuals being either unemployed or forced to take jobs below their qualifications, while less deserving candidates secure government positions.
2. Vacant Government Positions:
Due to the quota system, many government jobs remain vacant, leading to inefficiencies and a lack of skilled workforce in critical sectors.
3. Human Rights Violations:
The government and police forces have responded to peaceful protests with violence, resulting in the shooting and killing of students. This is a grave violation of human rights and an unacceptable response to citizens exercising their democratic rights.
Supporting Facts:
- News reports and investigations have documented numerous instances of violence against peaceful protestors advocating for quota reform.
- Statistical data shows a significant number of government positions remaining unfilled due to the current quota system.
- Surveys indicate widespread public support for a merit-based employment system and opposition to the existing quota system.
Conclusion:
We urge the High Court to act in the interest of justice and equality by addressing the critical issues raised in this petition. Reforming the quota system will ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities to secure government jobs based on their merit. Holding the government accountable for its actions and seeking justice for the students who were killed will reaffirm the rule of law and protect the rights of all citizens.
Call to Action:
Please consider the voices of the students and citizens of Bangladesh. We implore the High Court to intervene, initiate the necessary reforms, and demand accountability from the current government. Your leadership and commitment to justice are essential for the future of our country.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter and for your dedication to upholding the principles of justice and equality.
Sincerely,
