Urgent Need for Federal Legislation on Roadside Zoos in Canada

Urgent Need for Federal Legislation on Roadside Zoos in Canada
The Issue
We call on the Canadian government to enact and enforce federal legislation to regulate roadside zoos across the country, ensuring the humane treatment of all animals and safeguarding public safety. Our request stems from a significant concern over the welfare of animals confined in inadequate and often inhumane conditions.
In Canada, stringent regulations govern seemingly minor activities such as installing a fence or owning domestic pets. However, a stark contrast exists in the oversight of roadside zoos, where there is no federal legislation to ensure the proper care of animals. This regulatory void allows individuals lacking proper education, formal training, or experience to operate facilities that confine wild animals to small, inadequate cages, leading to severe physical and psychological distress.
The case of "Jungle Cat World" in Orono, Ontario, exemplifies the urgent need for reform. Animals at this facility are kept in distressingly small enclosures, exhibiting behaviours indicative of severe distress and physical ailments, such as a lion with a noticeable limp. Despite public outcry and over a thousand signatures demanding the closure of this zoo, effective federal intervention remains lacking.
We urgently request Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and relevant governmental bodies to:
1. Shut down all roadside zoos that house exotic animals, relocating these animals to sanctuaries where they can begin their rehabilitation in environments that respect their natural behaviors and needs.
2. Implement stringent oversight for zoos housing farm animals, including:
- Establishing strict licensing requirements with mandatory education and training for zoo operators.
- Creating a robust inspection and enforcement mechanism to ensure all zoos comply with enhanced animal welfare standards.
As a nation that values compassion and progress, Canada must not allow animals to suffer in conditions that do not meet basic welfare standards. By signing this petition, you are standing up for the rights of animals to live in environments that respect their well-being and freedom.
Join us in calling on our government to take decisive action and establish laws that reflect our collective values and commitment to animal welfare.
