Urgent: Let's Keep Alaska Job Corp Open

Urgent: Let's Keep Alaska Job Corp Open

The Issue

The impending closure of Job Corps programs in Alaska threatens to deprive young individuals of a critical pathway to education and employment. As one of the most successful federal programs in helping young people launch their careers, Job Corps provides essential services that are integral to both personal and community development. The planned closures would not only affect young Alaskans directly but also have a ripple effect on the local economy and workforce.

Currently, Job Corps serves hundreds of students in Alaska, offering them avenues for career development, skills training, and academic education. Many of these students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and rely on these programs for a chance to improve their living conditions. Shutting down these centers will disproportionately impact communities that have few other educational and vocational options.

The importance of maintaining these programs cannot be overstated. Alaska faces unique challenges due to its geographical isolation, and many of its residents rely on programs like Job Corps that offer both residential and non-residential options. The potential closure could exacerbate the state's challenges, leading to higher unemployment rates among youths and increased social issues.

Furthermore, the tangible benefits of these programs are evident. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps has successfully placed thousands of students in jobs, further education, or the military. Cutting these programs would undermine years of progress and deprive students of opportunities to develop critical skills in trades, health care, and technology – sectors that are pivotal to Alaska's current and future labor market

My daughter is currently a student at Alaska Job Corps, and the positive impact this program has had on her is truly remarkable. She is gaining valuable skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose that she could not have found anywhere else. For the first time, she has clear goals for her future and a plan to achieve them. She is proud of the program and what she is learning.

Already, employers have reached out to her saying, “Apply when you graduate—we have a place for you.” Through the Job Corps, she is not only developing job-specific training, but also learning responsibility, leadership, and organization—skills that will serve her throughout life.

Alaska Job Corps provides a unique and critical service to our youth. Job Corp enables students/young adults to be able to learn both social skills and job skills that will support their success in life. Unlike traditional education pathways, it offers hands-on learning and career training for students who may not be ready or able to attend college.  We in Alaska do not have trade school opportunities that are able to support students in this way. For many, it is the only viable opportunity for continuing education after high school.

As a parent and an employer, I can say with confidence that this program is preparing young adults to be reliable, skilled members of the workforce. It is creating future employees, leaders, and community members.

The sudden cutting of funding and the potential closure of Alaska Job Corps is deeply concerning. What message are we sending to our youth who are working so hard, only to have their futures disrupted? For some students, this program is not just a stepping stone—it is their only path forward.

We should be investing in our youth, not removing one of the few resources they have. Closing this program would be a profound injustice—not only to the students currently enrolled, but to future students and to our communities that depend on a skilled, motivated workforce.

Please help us keep the Alaska Job Corps open and strong. Our young people deserve the opportunity to build a better future. Lets use Alaska Job Corp as an example of the success of this program!

We urge lawmakers and responsible authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternatives that would allow these indispensable programs to continue. Options could include seeking additional funding, consolidating resources, or introducing community partnerships to maintain operations.

Sign this petition to stand against the closure of Job Corps programs in Alaska and advocate for the future of our young citizens.
