From KIR:
“Here’s what we know about the suspect who seriously injured a Santa Cruz Police Officer last night, and battered two others
Mathew Robert Evans is 33 years old, unemployed from Watsonville, and should have been in jail.
In August 2023, Evans was arrested by SO Deputies for felony battery to a senior. He was named as the “restrained” in a domestic protective order, and released to pretrial own recognizance one month later.
Over the next 12 months while under the watchful eyes of pretrial probation, Evans violated that DVRO a half dozen times, and gave the victim another felony level thrashing.
Back in jail in November of 2024, the DA’s Office offered Evans a plea deal…
One month later, Evans entered a plea of “No Contest” to one count of felony battery on a senior, and two counts to violating a court order. He was sentenced by the honorable Leila Sayar to 1 year in jail (time served) and no probation.
Dismissed was on count of felony battery, one sentencing enhancement for committing a felony while released to OR, one count of felony vandalism, and two counts of violating an RO.
Each count of violating those court orders is punishable by up to one year in jail. Likewise felony vandalism. Cruelty (battery) to a senior is punishable from 2-4 years in the pinta.
In short, Evans shouldn’t have hit the streets until 2035.”
