Urgent call to improve Access to drinkable water in Gaza #H2O4GAZA

The Issue

Our Plea:
We, a global community, urgently call on the Israeli government to open its water supply facilities to maximum capacity and provide essential support for the reconstruction of water desalination plants in Gaza. This action is critical to prevent the loss of lives and the spread of disease among the population suffering from the dire consequences of the conflict.

Petition to: Israeli Government and International Community

Background:
The people of Gaza are enduring an unprecedented crisis. With the destruction of water desalination plants due to bombings, the majority of Gaza’s population is now without access to adequate levels of potable water. This situation has escalated into a public health emergency, with risks of waterborne diseases soaring among the 2 million residents. The blockade has further exacerbated these conditions, severely limiting the entry of fuel and supplies necessary for water purification and healthcare.

Before the current war, Israel supplied 8-10% of Gaza's water, while 88-90% came from makeshift wells using a coastal aquifer, the primary freshwater source. However, years of over-extraction, contamination, and inadequate infrastructure have deteriorated the aquifer's water quality. Current security concerns disrupt fuel delivery for necessary water pumps, worsening the crisis.

To tackle this, increasing water supplies from existing pipelines becomes imperative due to security concerns hindering fuel delivery. A pipeline from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates now supplies southern Gaza, with one out of three Israeli pipelines in operation (Second pipeline went out of service 12/2023) . It's crucial to stress that the goal isn't assigning blame but collaboratively enhancing water access amid challenges from disrupted fuel supply for water pumps.
Update: 2/22/2024 Egypt connected a second pipeline in a joint humanitarian effort with the U.A.E to supply southern Gaza with fresh drinking water after commissioning 3 desalination plants.

The campaign's objective is not about assigning blame but ensuring Gazans have access to clean, drinkable water, preventing infectious diseases. Increasing the three Israeli pipelines' capacity would alleviate the deficit caused by the current inability to deliver fuel.

Strategy:

Our campaign adopts a fully focused strategy to advocate for fully utilizing and increasing throughput of the existing water supply pipeline to Gaza in addition to establishing new emergency water desalination plants used for the sole peaceful purpose of providing fresh drinking water from salt water sources. We avail the plant to third party inspections to ensure the peaceful use of the plant.

Need:
The dire need for clean water in Gaza cannot be overstated. With less than 4% of water being drinkable and the destruction of sanitation facilities, the risk of disease and death is alarmingly high. Our campaign is dedicated to satisfying the basic human right to clean water, targeting all people in Gaza who are in desperate need of this essential resource.

Vision:

We envision a future where the people of Gaza have unrestricted access to clean, safe water. Through concerted efforts and international cooperation, we aim to create a network of support that not only addresses the immediate water crisis but also fosters a culture of resilience and sustainability. We dream of a day when no child, woman, or man in Gaza has to suffer from preventable diseases due to a lack of clean water.

Why This Campaign?

This campaign is designed to address the most pressing humanitarian need in Gaza: access to clean water. By focusing on a specific demographic and employing a targeted strategy, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of millions. The restoration and maximization of water supply facilities, coupled with the reconstruction of desalination plants, are feasible, achievable goals that can significantly improve living conditions in Gaza.

Our campaign is grounded in a deep understanding of the crisis and offers a practical solution to a critical problem. By mobilizing global support, we can pressure both the Israeli government and the international community to take immediate action, By urging for the immediate action to maximize water supply and support the reconstruction of water desalination plants in Gaza, this campaign is rooted in the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence. It recognizes the complex dynamics of security concerns while advocating for the essential needs of civilians caught in conflict situations.

Action Steps:

Signature Collection: We aim to gather millions of signatures worldwide to demonstrate global concern and solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Awareness Campaign: Through social media, public events, and partnerships with influential organizations, we will highlight the urgent need for clean water in Gaza and the risks of inaction.
Dialogue with Decision-Makers: We plan to engage directly with Israeli officials, international governments, and UN bodies, presenting our petition and advocating for immediate changes.
Support for On-Ground NGOs: By aligning with organizations working within Gaza, we aim to facilitate the delivery of immediate water aid and technical support for rebuilding infrastructure.
