Urgent Call to Action: Address Greenport's Hazardous Sidewalks on Front Street

Urgent Call to Action: Address Greenport's Hazardous Sidewalks on Front Street
The Issue
To the Esteemed Members of the Greenport Village Government,
I am writing to you today with an urgent and profound plea regarding the dangerously neglected sidewalks on Front Street.
Last night, what should have been a peaceful evening entertaining my family and friends at our restaurant Alpina, located at 45 Front St., transformed into a horrifying scene as we witnessed a preventable accident unfold before our very eyes, scarring not only our memory but also that of our children.
An elderly woman, simply enjoying a stroll westward on Front Street, tripped violently over a significant, uneven level between two concrete slabs. The fall was brutal; she landed face-first, suffering a broken nose and potential concussion, necessitating immediate medical and police intervention.
This was not merely an unfortunate incident, as my staff can attest that they have witnessed multiple people tripping on the exact same location on several prior occasion’s.
As a dedicated local business owner, I can attest that the safety and accessibility of our streets is paramount to the vitality and well-being of our community. The current state of the Front Street sidewalks is not only a severe hazard to pedestrians, particularly our vulnerable elderly residents and those with disabilities, but it also reflects poorly on our village's commitment to its citizens and visitors.
I implore you to take immediate and decisive action by conducting a comprehensive and urgent review of the entire Front Street sidewalk infrastructure. It is imperative that we identify and rectify every hazardous uneven surface, every cracked slab, and every obstacle that threatens the safety of our residents and visitors. This review must prioritize making our sidewalks truly accessible for everyone, including those who rely on wheelchairs.
The time for action is now.
Sincerely,
Robin Mueller
