Urgent Call for the UN to Formally Recognize and Declare a State-Sponsored Genocide
The Issue
The Amhara people in Ethiopia are facing a systemic, state-sanctioned campaign of ethnic violence, mass displacement, and total war. What began as structural marginalization has escalated into coordinated atrocities backed by federal policy and heavy weaponry. To prevent further catastrophic loss of life, the international community must break its silence and hold perpetrators accountable.
The Crisis
State-Declared Aggression: The federal administration has treated the Amhara population as a collective target, deploying military campaigns, mass political detentions, and official rhetoric designed to criminalize and dismantle the group.
Attacks on Holy & Civilian Sanctuaries: Asymmetric warfare and automated drone strikes have been deployed against non-combatant zones. This includes lethal bombardments on religious monasteries and churches in Wollo, destroying sacred cultural heritage and killing sheltering civilians.
Pogroms and Expulsions (Arsi & Beyond): Amhara minority communities living outside their historical regions—such as in Arsi and Wollega—have suffered horrific, coordinated ethnic cleansing, massacres, and home burnings by radical groups operating with state impunity.
Weaponized Famine: Humanitarian blockades, the deliberate destruction of crops, and the restriction of life-saving aid are actively being used to starve rural Amhara communities.
Our Call to Action
We urge UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Human Rights Council to immediately take action by:
1. Formally Classifying the Atrocities: Launch an official UN investigation to formally recognize the violence against the Amhara people as genocide and crimes against humanity.
2. Deploying a Fact-Finding Mission: Send an independent commission of inquiry to document war crimes, including the drone strikes on Wollo monasteries and massacres in Arsi.
3. Imposing Sanctions and Arms Embargoes: Target key officials orchestrating these human rights violations with travel bans and asset freezes, alongside international arms restrictions.
4. Ensuring Humanitarian Access: Establish secure, unhindered corridors to deliver food, medicine, and aid to conflict and famine-stricken areas.
