Urgent Call for Stronger Laws Against Animal Abuse in Nepal: Protecting the Voiceless
The Issue
Dear Fellow Citizens of Nepal and Supporters,
I am writing to you today with a heavy heart and a deep sense of urgency regarding the current laws on animal abuse in our country. As it stands, the penalties for those who abuse or kill animals are shockingly minimal - a mere fine and a short prison sentence. This leniency fails to reflect the seriousness of these crimes and the pain and suffering inflicted upon innocent beings.
Recent events have brought this issue into stark focus. Just a few days ago, a group of individuals callously killed a dog in a cruel and horrifying manner, capturing their barbaric act on social media. The dog was buried alive while still breathing, a chilling display of cruelty that should have no place in a civilized society. In another disturbing incident, a man violently beat a dog for simply doing what comes naturally to it - hunting for food. And yet, another heart-wrenching case saw a man mercilessly beat his own pet dog on the roof, a place that should have been a safe haven for the loyal animal.
These incidents are not isolated. They are part of a disturbing pattern of animal abuse that plagues our communities. Dogs, cats, and other animals are sentient beings who feel pain and fear just as we do. They rely on us to protect and care for them, yet all too often, they are met with cruelty and neglect. It is also essential to recognize that animal abuse takes many forms beyond physical violence. Neglect, such as failing to provide proper care, food, or shelter, is also a form of cruelty. Chaining animals for extended periods, depriving them of freedom and proper care, is another blatant violation of their rights. Additionally, abandoning pets on the streets, leaving them to fend for themselves, is a cruel and inhumane act that must be condemned.
It is high time for us to advocate for change. We must urge those in power to revise the existing laws on animal abuse, imposing stricter penalties such as a minimum fine of Rs. 50,000 and a minimum prison term of 3 months for offenders. These measures will send a clear message to would-be abusers that such behavior will not be tolerated in our society.
I implore each and every one of you to join hands in this fight for justice and compassion. Sign the petition calling for harsher laws against animal abuse and share it far and wide. Let us raise our voices for the voiceless, for the innocent creatures who have no means of defending themselves. Street dogs, cats, and animals are an integral part of our country; they deserve our respect and protection.
Together, we can make a difference. Let us stand united in our conviction that animals have a right to exist peacefully and free from harm. This planet is their home too, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it remains a safe and welcoming place for all beings.
Thank you for your compassion and commitment to this cause. Let us work together to create a better, more humane society for all.
