Dear County Attorney Reynolds,

On August 8, 2025, our community suffered a devastating tragedy when Deanna June Sommerfeld was killed and her husband, Mark Sommerfeld, was severely injured due to the impaired and reckless behavior of a repeat offender, Kayla Lynn Errebo. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement, prosecution, and sentencing to prevent future loss of life.

We, the undersigned members of the Saline County community, demand:

Stronger enforcement and prosecution of impaired and reckless driving offenses, with a focus on holding repeat offenders fully accountable.

Statutory reforms requiring mandatory sentencing for repeat DUI and reckless offenders, eliminating discretionary reductions and ensuring that repeat offenders face the maximum penalties allowed under Kansas law, brought before the judge rather than skipped or reduced due to perceived difficulty.

Rigorous enforcement of Ignition Interlock Device (IID) requirements, with swift and certain consequences for tampering, circumvention, or noncompliance.

Stronger enforcement of license suspensions and driving restrictions, ensuring that repeat offenders cannot continue to endanger the community. Escalating consequences are necessary when misdemeanors fail to prevent repeated violations.

If you are unable or unwilling to take these actions to protect the safety of Saline County residents, we respectfully request that you relinquish your position as County Attorney so that someone committed to enforcing justice and public safety may serve in your place.

We believe these measures are essential to prevent future tragedies and protect the lives of Saline County residents. Furthermore, the citizens of Saline County rely on your office to prioritize public safety above all else.

As County Attorney, you have the authority to prioritize prosecution and advocate for policy changes that uphold public safety and accountability.

We urge you to take immediate and decisive action. We stand ready to support initiatives that strengthen public safety and honor the memory of Deanna June Sommerfeld and other victims by working to ensure no other family endures loss like that of June and Mark.

Respectfully,

The family, friends, and community of Mark and June Sommerfeld
