Urgent Call for Fair Competition&Government Intervention in eHailingFare Policies Malaysia

The Issue

A. In recent years, we have witnessed an alarming trend of ride-hailing platforms (Grab,Airaisa,Maxim, inDrive....etc) engaging in aggressive price wars by continuously lowering fares to gain market share. While competition is desirable, it should not come at the expense of fair compensation for drivers or compromise the quality of service provided to passengers.

We firmly believe that it is the responsibility of the government to establish a regulatory framework that fosters fair competition, safeguards the rights of drivers, and protects the interests of consumers. Therefore, we respectfully request the following actions to be taken:

Implementation of Fair Pricing Regulations: We urge the government to establish clear guidelines and regulations regarding minimum fare rates that ensure drivers receive fair compensation for their services. These regulations should consider factors such as operating costs, driver earnings, and industry standards.
Monitoring and Enforcement: We call upon the government to strengthen its monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to ensure ride-hailing platforms comply with established pricing regulations. Regular audits and assessments should be conducted to detect any instances of unfair competition or anti-competitive behavior.

3.Collaboration with Stakeholders: We encourage the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including ride-hailing platforms, drivers' associations, and consumer advocacy groups. Collaborative efforts will enable the development of effective policies that strike a balance between fair competition, driver welfare, and passenger satisfaction.

4.Public Awareness and Education: We request the government to launch public awareness campaigns to educate drivers, passengers, and the general public about fair pricing practices in the ride-hailing industry. Transparent communication will help foster understanding and support for the government's initiatives.
We, the petitioners, firmly believe that by addressing these issues, the government can create a sustainable and equitable ride-hailing industry that benefits all stakeholders involved. Fair competition, fair pricing, and the protection of driver rights are essential components of a thriving economy and a just society.

B. Also urgently address the pressing issue of persistently low fares permitted by customers on ride-hailing platforms, specifically Maxim and InDriver. I firmly believe that immediate government intervention is crucial to impose heavier fines on these platforms for enabling such practices. Furthermore, I suggest implementing a system where the platform sets the price, and only one driver (without driver-to-driver competition) can finalise the fare, which will then be communicated to the passenger.

The allowance for customers to set low fares and the competition among drivers on these platforms has created an environment of unfair pricing and detrimental competition. This situation not only undermines the livelihoods of hardworking drivers but also contradicts the principles of economic justice and fair competition. It is imperative that the government takes decisive action to rectify this situation.

To effectively address this issue, I propose the following steps:

  1. Imposing Heavier Fines: The government should impose significantly higher fines on ride-hailing platforms, namely Maxim and InDriver, for permitting customers to set unreasonably low fares. These fines should serve as a strong deterrent and send a clear message that facilitating unfair pricing practices will face severe consequences.

  2. Platform-Controlled Pricing: Implement a system where the platform sets the price, based on factors such as distance, time, and other relevant parameters. This would ensure consistent and fair pricing across the platform, eliminating the ability of customers to undervalue the services provided by drivers.
  3. Eliminating Driver Competition: To curb unfair competition among drivers, only one driver should be allowed to finalize the fare for a particular ride request. This eliminates bidding wars or undercutting between drivers, promoting a more stable and equitable pricing structure.

  4. Transparent Communication with Passengers: Once the final fare is determined by the platform and the assigned driver, it should be clearly communicated to the passenger in advance. Transparent communication will enhance trust and ensure that passengers understand and acknowledge the fair value of the service they are receiving.

By implementing these measures, the government can effectively protect the rights of drivers, promote economic justice, and create a more sustainable and equitable ride-hailing industry.

I urgently urge you, as the responsible authority, to give immediate attention to this matter and take decisive action to impose heavier fines on Maxim and InDriver for enabling low fares set by customers. Additionally, I strongly encourage you to consider the implementation of platform-controlled pricing with limited driver competition to ensure fair and stable pricing for drivers and passengers alike.

Appeal for Government Intervention: Addressing Grab's Unfair Blocking of Drivers from Airport Pickups and Concealment of the Issue

urgently highlight a critical issue pertaining to Grab, a prominent ride-hailing platform. It has come to our attention that Grab is engaging in the unfair practice of blocking certain drivers from accessing airport pickups while concealing this issue under the guise of technical problems. I implore the government to intervene immediately and take decisive action to rectify this situation, ensuring fairness and equal opportunities for all drivers in the ride-hailing industry.

The blocking of drivers from airport pickups by Grab is a clear violation of fair competition and has significant repercussions for affected drivers. By selectively limiting access to airport customers, Grab is not only compromising the livelihoods of drivers but also distorting the competitive landscape within the ride-hailing industry.

Furthermore, the attempts made by Grab to hide this issue behind technical problems is deeply concerning. Concealing such discriminatory practices prevents affected drivers from seeking a resolution and inhibits transparency within the industry. Open and honest communication is crucial for establishing a fair and trustworthy marketplace.

In light of these grave concerns, I urgently request the government to take the following actions:

  1. Investigation and Regulatory Measures: Conduct a thorough investigation into Grab's blocking of drivers from airport pickups. Examine the extent and impact of this practice on drivers' earnings and competition within the ride-hailing industry. Based on the findings, enforce stringent regulations that prohibit ride-hailing platforms from engaging in discriminatory practices.
  2. Transparency and Accountability: Establish clear guidelines and requirements for ride-hailing platforms, such as Grab, to ensure transparency and accountability in their operations. Mandate public disclosure of any limitations or restrictions placed on drivers, including airport pickups. This will facilitate fair competition and allow drivers to make informed decisions about their participation on the platform.
  3. Collaboration with Airport Authorities: Foster close collaboration between relevant government entities responsible for transportation and airport authorities. Work together to establish fair and standardized policies regarding ride-hailing services at airports. Ensure that all ride-hailing platforms have equal access to airport pickups, thus promoting a level playing field and enhanced convenience for passengers.
  4. Protection for Drivers and Whistleblowers: Implement measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of drivers who come forward to report unfair practices by ride-hailing platforms. Encourage the reporting of critical information by offering legal protection, support, and appropriate channels to address their concerns effectively.

It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to rectify this situation and protect the rights of drivers. Fairness, transparency, and equal opportunities are essential to fostering a thriving and competitive ride-hailing industry.

Request for Government Intervention: Imposing Penalties on Grab for Unfairly Penalising Drivers and Disrupting Their Ability to Secure Jobs

Urgently address the unfair practices of Grab, a prominent ride-hailing platform, that penalise drivers for canceling jobs that do not benefit them due to traffic congestion or other issues. I implore the government to take immediate action by imposing penalties on Grab for unjustly penalizsng drivers and disrupting their ability to secure jobs. It is crucial to ensure that Grab, as a service provider, acts responsibly and in the best interest of its drivers.

The current policy implemented by Grab penalises drivers for canceling jobs, even when it is due to circumstances beyond their control, such as traffic congestion or other unforeseen issues. This practice not only penalises drivers unjustly but also disregards their well-being and the challenges they face while providing their services. It is unfair to penalise drivers for situations they cannot control, especially when their primary objective is to provide efficient and reliable transportation to passengers.

As a responsible government, it is imperative that you intervene in this matter by taking the following actions:

  1. Imposing Penalties on Grab: Introduce penalties or fines on Grab for their unfair treatment of drivers. This will discourage such practices and hold Grab accountable for their actions. Penalties should be commensurate with the severity of the offence and the impact on drivers' ability to secure jobs.
  2. Establishing Fair Policies: Collaborate with industry stakeholders, including ride-hailing platforms like Grab, drivers' associations, and consumer advocacy groups, to develop fair policies that take into account the challenges faced by drivers. Policies should be designed to protect drivers' interests while ensuring a quality and reliable service for passengers.
  3. Driver Support and Protection: Introduce measures to support and protect drivers who face unjust penalties for canceling jobs that do not benefit them. This can include providing recourse for drivers to contest unjust penalties, establishing a grievance mechanism, and offering legal protection against unfair treatment by ride-hailing platforms.

By taking these actions, the government can effectively protect the rights and interests of drivers, promote fairness and transparency within the ride-hailing industry, and ensure a mutually beneficial relationship between platforms like Grab and the drivers who provide the service.

Urgent Appeal for Government Intervention: Imposing Fines on Passengers for Non-Compliance with Passenger Limits and Luggage Regulations

Urgently address an issue of passenger non-compliance within the ride-hailing industry, specifically regarding passenger limits and luggage regulations. I strongly urge the government to take immediate action by imposing fines on passengers who knowingly violate these regulations, rather than penalising the drivers who have no control over passenger behaviour.

The current practice of penalising drivers for passenger non-compliance is unfair and places an undue burden on them. Drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety and lawful operation of their vehicles, but they cannot control the actions or decisions of passengers. It is unjust to hold drivers accountable for circumstances beyond their control.

To address this issue effectively, I implore the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Passenger Accountability: Introduce regulations that hold passengers accountable for their own actions and decisions. Implement fines or penalties for passengers who knowingly violate passenger limits or improperly store luggage. This will shift responsibility to the individuals who are directly involved in non-compliant behaviour.
  2. Enhanced Enforcement: Increase enforcement efforts to monitor passenger compliance with passenger limits and luggage regulations. Conduct random checks and targeted inspections to identify instances of non-compliance. This will act as a deterrent and encourage passengers to adhere to the regulations.
  3. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launch comprehensive public awareness campaigns to educate passengers about the importance of complying with passenger limits and luggage regulations. Clearly communicate the potential consequences of non-compliance to promote responsible behaviour among passengers.
  4. Collaboration with Ride-Hailing Platforms: Foster collaboration with ride-hailing platforms to implement strategies that promote passenger compliance. Platforms can integrate in-app reminders and educational materials to inform passengers about the regulations and encourage their adherence.

By imposing fines on passengers who knowingly violate regulations, the government can effectively address the issue of non-compliance without unfairly penalising drivers. This approach will create a culture of responsibility and ensure that passengers are held accountable for their actions.

I urgently request the government to prioritise this matter and take swift action to impose fines on passengers who disregard passenger limits and luggage regulations. This will promote fairness, accountability, and a safer ride-hailing experience for all stakeholders.

Appeal for Government Cooperation: Ensuring Cash Payment Security for Long-Distance Rides

Urgently address an issue that frequently occurs in long-distance rides, specifically the lack of payment security for cash transactions between drivers and passengers. I urge the government to cooperate with ride-hailing companies to implement measures that ensure passengers have sufficient funds to cover the fare before embarking on such journeys. Furthermore, I request that appropriate fines and penalties be imposed on platforms or drivers who fail to confirm payment or resolve payment issues promptly.

It has come to my attention that numerous cases have arisen where drivers have not received payment for long-distance trips, particularly from passengers who choose to pay in cash. When drivers approach the ride-hailing platform for resolution, they often face delays of up to a month or encounter unresponsiveness, causing significant financial strain on the drivers. These instances raise serious concerns about the reliability and security of cash transactions.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government's cooperation in implementing the following measures:

  1. Pre-Trip Payment Verification: Ride-hailing platforms should require passengers to verify their payment method and ensure sufficient funds to cover the fare before confirming the trip. This verification process can be conducted through various secure methods, such as pre-authorization of funds or digital wallets.
  2. Prompt Resolution of Payment Issues: Ride-hailing platforms must establish clear protocols and dedicated support channels to promptly address payment issues reported by drivers. Delays in resolving payment disputes should be minimized to alleviate financial burdens on drivers.
  3. Fines and Penalties: Government agencies should work in conjunction with ride-hailing platforms to establish fines and penalties for platforms or drivers who neglect to confirm payment or fail to resolve payment issues in a timely manner. These penalties will serve as deterrents and ensure compliance with payment security measures.
  4. Police Station Reporting: Drivers should be empowered to take appropriate action when passengers are unable to provide payment. If a passenger is unable to pay for a long-distance trip, drivers should be allowed to escort them to the nearest police station to report the incident. Ride-hailing platforms should assume responsibility for compensating drivers in such cases, as they assert that such incidents occur.

By cooperating with ride-hailing platforms and implementing these measures, the government can significantly enhance payment security for long-distance rides and protect the financial well-being of drivers. This collaborative effort will instill confidence in the ride-hailing industry and promote fairness and accountability among all stakeholders.

Request for Fare Adjustment in Unpopular Areas to Ensure Fair Compensation for Drivers

Urgently address an issue that affects drivers in less popular areas, particularly regarding fare compensation when returning from drop-off locations. I kindly request the government's intervention to adjust fares in these areas, such as Klang, Nilai, Rawang, and other less frequently serviced locations, to ensure that drivers are adequately compensated for their return trips and are not left empty-handed.

Currently, drivers often face significant financial challenges when returning from drop-off locations in less popular areas. The lack of demand in these regions leads to a scarcity of ride requests, leaving drivers with little to no income during their return trips. This situation is unfair and unsustainable for drivers who provide essential transportation services to all areas.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government's consideration of the following actions:

  1. Fare Adjustment: Adjust the fare structure in less popular areas to ensure that drivers are fairly compensated for their time and fuel expenses during return trips. This adjustment should account for the potential income loss drivers experience due to the lower demand in these regions.
  2. Incentives for Service in Unpopular Areas: Introduce incentives or bonuses for drivers who serve in less popular areas. These incentives can encourage drivers to accept rides in these locations and help alleviate the financial strain caused by return trips without passengers.
  3. Market Analysis and Research: Conduct a comprehensive analysis of the transportation market in less popular areas to understand the specific challenges faced by drivers. This research can help identify additional strategies or policies to support drivers in these regions effectively.

By implementing these measures, the government can ensure fair compensation for drivers in less popular areas, promote inclusivity in the ride-hailing industry, and improve the overall sustainability and availability of transportation services throughout the country.

Request for Government Intervention: Penalty for Ride-Hailing Platforms Refusing to Pay Drivers and Establishment of Reporting Department

Urgently address a critical issue within the ride-hailing industry, specifically regarding ride-hailing platforms that refuse to pay drivers for services rendered, particularly when criminal incidents occur, such as passengers who refuse payment after reaching their drop-off destinations. To safeguard the interests of drivers and ensure timely resolution of such issues, I kindly request the government's intervention in imposing penalties on ride-hailing platforms that fail to compensate drivers and the establishment of a dedicated reporting department.

As the backbone of the ride-hailing industry, drivers play a pivotal role in providing transportation services to the public. It is essential that they are protected from financial losses resulting from criminal actions committed by passengers. Furthermore, ride-hailing platforms must be held accountable for their responsibilities in promptly resolving disputes and compensating drivers for their services.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Penalties for Non-Payment: Impose significant penalties on ride-hailing platforms that refuse to pay drivers for completed rides, especially when criminal incidents occur. These penalties should be proportionate to the severity and frequency of such non-payment incidents.
  2. Reporting Department for Drivers: Establish a dedicated department or hotline within the government agency responsible for transportation to receive and process reports from drivers regarding non-payment and related issues. This department should be equipped to investigate and resolve disputes promptly.
  3. Timely Resolution: Enforce a strict timeline for ride-hailing platforms to resolve payment disputes and compensate drivers. The resolution should ideally be completed within 1 to 2 days from the time of reporting, ensuring drivers do not endure prolonged financial hardship.

  4. Transparent Guidelines: Collaborate with ride-hailing platforms to develop transparent guidelines for handling payment disputes and compensating drivers. These guidelines should prioritize fairness, accountability, and timely resolution.

By implementing these measures, the government can effectively protect the rights and interests of drivers and foster a fair and sustainable ride-hailing ecosystem. The establishment of a dedicated reporting department will provide drivers with a reliable channel to seek redress and ensure that non-payment issues are addressed swiftly.

Urgent Appeal for Government Intervention: Imposing Fines on Ride-Hailing Platforms for Setting Unsafe Time Frames for Drivers

Urgently address a pressing issue within the ride-hailing industry that poses risks to driver safety. Specifically, ride-hailing platforms like Maxim and InDrive have implemented unsafe time frames for drivers to reach destinations, resulting in drivers racing to pick-up locations to avoid penalties. This practice is dangerous, compromises driver safety, and I urgently request the government's intervention to impose fines on these platforms for endangering drivers' lives.

Ride-hailing drivers are essential service providers who cater to the transportation needs of the public. However, the imposition of rigid and unrealistic time frames for drivers to reach pick-up destinations has put drivers in hazardous situations. Instances of drivers racing to avoid penalties, especially during adverse weather conditions such as rain or other challenging circumstances, significantly increase the risk of accidents and jeopardize both the drivers' lives and the safety of passengers and other road users.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently appeal to the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Imposing Fines on Ride-Hailing Platforms: Impose fines and penalties on ride-hailing platforms that set unsafe time frames for drivers. These fines should be proportionate to the severity of the time frame requirements and the potential risk posed to driver safety.
  2. Driver Safety First: Encourage ride-hailing platforms to prioritize driver safety over strict time frames. Allow drivers to exercise prudence and make safety a priority, especially in challenging weather or road conditions.
  3. Collaboration with Driver Associations: Engage with driver associations and representatives to gather feedback and insights on time frame policies and their impact on driver safety. Collaboratively develop fair and reasonable time frame guidelines that consider both efficient service and driver well-being.
  4. Transparent and Flexible Policies: Ensure that ride-hailing platforms establish transparent and flexible policies that allow drivers to handle unexpected situations responsibly without fear of penalties. Encourage open communication between drivers and the platform to report any unsafe time frame demands.

By implementing these measures, the government can safeguard driver safety and promote responsible practices within the ride-hailing industry. It is essential to create an environment where drivers can focus on providing reliable service while ensuring their well-being and the safety of passengers.

Imposing Fines on InDrive for Allowing Non-Penalised Passenger Confirmations and Denials

urgently address a significant issue within the ride-hailing industry concerning the ride-hailing platform InDrive. Specifically, I urge the government to impose fines on InDrive for allowing passenger confirmations and denials without any penalties, leading to wasted driver time and resources.

In the current system, passengers can confirm or deny ride requests without any consequences or penalties, regardless of the frequency or reason for their actions. This practice results in drivers wasting valuable time and resources reaching destinations for passengers who subsequently deny the ride, causing significant frustration and financial burden for drivers.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Fines on InDrive: Impose fines on InDrive for enabling passenger confirmations and denials without penalties. These fines should act as a deterrent against frivolous or frequent actions by passengers that waste driver time and resources.
  2. Fair Passenger Behavior Guidelines: Collaborate with ride-hailing platforms like InDrive to establish fair passenger behavior guidelines. These guidelines should ensure that passengers are encouraged to commit to ride requests responsibly, respecting drivers' time and efforts.
  3. Reporting Mechanism for Drivers: Establish a dedicated reporting mechanism for drivers to report instances of passengers who confirm and deny rides without consequences. This will enable ride-hailing platforms to take appropriate action against such passenger behavior.
  4. Transparent Passenger Behavior Policy: Require ride-hailing platforms to communicate clearly with passengers about the importance of confirming ride requests responsibly and the potential consequences of frequent denials.

By implementing these measures, the government can protect the interests of ride-hailing drivers, promote accountability among passengers, and foster a more efficient and reliable ride-hailing ecosystem.

Appeal for Government Intervention: Imposing Fines on Ride-Hailing Platforms for Excessive Real IC Verification

Urgently address a critical issue within the ride-hailing industry concerning excessive real IC (identification card) verification practices by ride-hailing platforms. I urgently request the government's intervention to impose fines on platforms that insist on such practices and advocate for the use of photo step IC verification with clear guidelines on which e-hailing companies are authorized to collect this information.

While ensuring user safety and security is paramount, the excessive collection of sensitive personal information, such as demanding real IC verification from users, raises significant privacy concerns. In light of increasing privacy breaches and identity theft risks, it is imperative to protect users' rights and data while maintaining safety measures within the ride-hailing ecosystem.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently appeal to the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Fines on Excessive Real IC Verification: Impose fines on ride-hailing platforms that insist on excessive real IC verification from users. These fines should act as a deterrent against compromising users' privacy rights.
  2. Photo Step IC Verification: Advocate for the use of photo step IC verification as a secure and privacy-friendly alternative. This method allows users to provide a photo of their IC without revealing sensitive details, striking a balance between safety and privacy.
  3. Authorization Guidelines: Establish clear guidelines on which e-hailing companies are authorized to collect photo step IC verification. This will ensure that only legitimate and trustworthy platforms have access to users' information.
  4. Data Protection Regulations: Strengthen data protection regulations and collaborate with ride-hailing platforms to ensure compliance with these laws. Users' personal information should be handled responsibly and in accordance with applicable data protection standards.

By implementing these measures, the government can protect users' privacy rights while maintaining safety and security in the ride-hailing industry. Striking this balance is crucial to fostering public trust and confidence in ride-hailing platforms.

Urgent Appeal for Government Intervention: Requiring Ride-Hailing Platforms to Establish Technical Support at Airports and Company Locations for Face-to-Face Settlement

Urgently address a critical issue within the ride-hailing industry that affects drivers' ability to provide reliable transportation services. I strongly urge the government to require ride-hailing platforms to establish dedicated technical support teams at airports and their company locations, enabling face-to-face settlement for driver issues, such as not receiving orders from airports or sudden app malfunctions. There should be no excuse for platforms to deny drivers the opportunity to meet with the technical team and promptly resolve these problems.

Airports and company locations are pivotal hubs for ride-hailing drivers, and ensuring their seamless operation is crucial to meeting public transportation needs. However, drivers often encounter technical issues with ride-hailing apps or other platform-related problems that hinder their ability to provide efficient service. Currently, the lack of dedicated technical teams and the inability to settle issues in person exacerbate these challenges, causing frustration and financial hardship for drivers.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government to consider the following actions:

  1. Mandate Technical Support at Airports: Require ride-hailing platforms to establish dedicated technical support teams at airports to assist drivers with app-related or other technical issues. These teams should be readily available during peak hours to ensure immediate assistance.
  2. Technical Support at Company Locations: Encourage ride-hailing platforms to extend technical support services to their company locations, enabling drivers to seek face-to-face resolution for app and other platform-related problems.
  3. Transparent Communication: Collaborate with ride-hailing platforms to ensure transparent communication between drivers and technical teams. Drivers should be informed of the locations and contact details of technical support teams for swift assistance.
  4. Prompt Issue Resolution: Emphasise the importance of prompt issue resolution and technical assistance to minimise disruption to driver operations and enhance overall service efficiency.

By implementing these measures, the government can promote fair practices within the ride-hailing industry, protect drivers' interests, and ensure the smooth operation of transportation services at airports and company locations.

Appeal for Government Intervention: Implementing Fair Additional Fare Structures for Ride-Hailing Drivers

Urgently address a crucial issue within the ride-hailing industry concerning driver earnings. I strongly urge the government to consider implementing fair and transparent additional fare structures that adequately compensate ride-hailing drivers during peak season timings, heavy rain, long-distance trips, traffic jams, holidays, and late-night hours (6 pm to 6 am).

Currently, ride-hailing drivers often face challenges in earning a fair and sustainable income, especially during peak demand periods and adverse weather conditions. Additionally, long-distance trips, traffic congestion, and late-night hours can significantly impact drivers' well-being and safety. To protect the welfare of drivers and ensure their continued commitment to providing reliable transportation services, it is crucial to establish additional fare structures that appropriately compensate them for these challenges.

To address this issue effectively, I urgently request the government to consider the following fare structures:

  1. Peak Season Surcharge: Implement additional fare charges during peak seasons when demand is high, ensuring drivers receive fair compensation during times of increased workload.
  2. Adverse Weather Surcharge: Introduce surcharges during heavy rain and other adverse weather conditions to compensate drivers for the added challenges and risks they face.
  3. Long-Distance Safety Fare: Establish fair fares for long-distance trips, considering the time and effort drivers invest in providing safe transportation over extended distances.
  4. Heavy traffic Jam Fare: Implement fare adjustments during heavy traffic jams to compensate drivers for the time spent waiting in congested areas.
  5. Holiday Fare: Introduce fare structures for holidays and festive seasons to recognize the increased demand for rides during these times and to ensure drivers are appropriately rewarded for their services.
  6. Late-Night Surcharge: Consider higher fares for trips between 6 pm and 6 am to protect drivers from excessive overworking and ensure their well-being during late-night hours.

By implementing these measures, the government can create a more equitable and sustainable ride-hailing ecosystem, promoting a positive environment for drivers and ensuring passengers have access to reliable transportation services even during challenging circumstances.

Violations of Human Rights and Economic Justice in the Ride-Hailing Industry.

Human Rights: The issue of persistently low fares in ride-hailing platforms can have implications for human rights, particularly in relation to workers' rights and livelihoods. Drivers who rely on these platforms for income may face challenges in earning a fair and liveable wage due to the continuous lowering of fares. Ensuring fair compensation for work is an important aspect of human rights, as recognised in various international labor rights frameworks.

Economic Justice: The concept of economic justice revolves around fairness and equality in economic systems. The low fares set by ride-hailing platforms can impact the economic well-being and stability of drivers. Unfair competition through consistently low pricing can contribute to income inequality and hinder drivers' ability to sustain themselves and their families. Advocating for economic justice involves addressing disparities and advocating for fair treatment and equitable opportunities for all individuals within the economic system.

The Issue
