Urgent Call for BCBC to Action: Protect Bridgend County from Recurring Flooding Disasters

Urgent Call for BCBC to Action: Protect Bridgend County from Recurring Flooding Disasters
The Issue
Following the previous flash flood in September 2024, numerous homes in Bryntirion, Newbridge Fields, and Ty Caer Castell, as well as local businesses such as Wetherspoons and the Ty-Risha, have experienced repeated flooding, with the most recent event taking place on Friday, June 13th.
My mother's home was severely impacted by a flood in September 2024, forcing her to temporarily relocate. She was scheduled to return home in October 2025, but this has been delayed yet again due to the recent flash floods. Despite demanding an investigation into the inadequate storm drains, it appears that no substantial measures have been taken by BCBC to resolve the problem, as evidenced by the recurrent flooding events. Every time it rains, my mother like many others lives in constant fear of another flood.
It has become clear that the primary cause of this recurrent flooding is the inadequate maintenance of storm drains and raised pavements allowing water to escape, flooding the streets, and only subsiding once the rain stops. Without prompt action from the council, we fear these events will only worsen and further impact additional areas in Bridgend County.
Residents and business owners have incurred devastating damage to their properties, causing emotional distress and financial strain. As we witnessed on Friday, June 13th, 2025, many properties that experienced flooding in September were once again affected. It is crucial that the council recognises the urgency of this issue and takes appropriate measures to rectify these problems. The next flood could pose a serious threat to public safety.
As concerned citizens and members of this community, we demand that the Bridgend County Council address these critical groundwork issues and take the following actions:
1. Develop a comprehensive maintenance plan to ensure proper functioning of storm drains and repair damaged or insufficient drainage infrastructure.
2. Address raised pavements, curbing, and other surface issues contributing to the flooding.
3. Conduct thorough assessments of flood-prone areas to identify additional risks and preventative measures.
4. Allocate funding to make homes more flood-resilient and protect properties from future flooding events.
With more homes and businesses being affected, we cannot allow this to keep happening. Therefore we the undersigned, urge the Bridgend County Council to prioritise the well-being and safety of our community by addressing these flooding issues immediately.
Sincerely,
Gemma Stanley and Concerned Citizens of Bridgend County
