George's Background
For over a decade, George lived safely at Cooks River (in the Kogarah Golf Club) . He was a deeply loved community pet, not an abandoned stray, with his safety actively monitored by a network of local caretakers and CCTV. On June 26, George was removed from his home by a visiting social media content creator, raising concerns about how animal rescue guidelines were followed.

We are demanding a formal review based on the following documented facts:

1. A Known Owner Was Formally Identified
On June 29, the individual who took George posted a public post stating she had spoken with his original owner (who originally brought George to the Golf Club) and learned his history. Despite knowing exactly where he belonged, George was not returned. We are deeply concerned that the Animal Welfare League (AWL) processed him as an "unknown stray" even after his background was confirmed.

2. Conflicting Health Claims
During the initial capture, the creator explicitly told her audience on video, "She is in good health" despite claims of him being rescued under "medical concerns"  Yet, there was a strange 5-day gap between his capture and his first vet visit on July 1. At that visit, he was diagnosed with age-related cataract development. A routine, non-emergency condition found days later cannot be used to retroactively justify removing him from his home in the first place.

3. Proof of a Secret Private Handover
On July 1, a private individual commented on social media asking to take George home. The creator replied, asking them to "DM me." While these comments were quickly deleted, the community captured screenshots. We are highly concerned that this interaction led to a back-channel, private handover. Instead of returning George to his known owner or at the very least, utilizing a transparent process that would have allowed the community to step in and bring him home., he was quietly given away behind closed doors.

4. A Vet "Recommendation" Used as a Weapon
The creator later claimed that a vet "recommended" George be monitored for his cataracts by a single owner. Cataracts can be a part of aging, not an acute medical emergency. A basic veterinary suggestion should never have been enforced as an absolute rule to permanently withhold George from his caretakers, who were already fully equipped to monitor his health.

5. Standard Organization Rules Were Bypassed
WIRES' mandate is strictly limited to native wildlife, and the AWL officially states they do not accept healthy strays. Because the creator initially recorded George as being in good health, we question how a healthy, domestic, non-native animal bypassed standard intake rules at both organizations.

6. Documented Stress and Injury
The creator's own video footage shows George looking vibrant before his capture. Later footage of him inside a transport box shows him severely out of breath and in distress with a fresh, bleeding scrape on his bill. This caused severe, unnecessary stress to a senior animal.

The Current Situation
Because George has most likely been quietly moved to a private property, an older, solo goose has been forced into a completely foreign environment. The extreme stress of sudden relocation and potential bullying from existing flock animals is dangerous for a senior goose. George already had a safe, monitored home. Returning him to his established territory is the only humane option.

OUR REQUESTS

To the Animal Welfare League (AWL): Provide full transparency regarding George's current location, review the timeline of when his rightful owner was identified, and work to safely return him to his home territory.

To WIRES: Review how your organization's name and authority were used in this situation to ensure domestic animal procedures are clear to all volunteers.

To the NSW Minister for Agriculture: Launch a formal, transparent review of this animal's intake to ensure standard administrative procedures and owner rights are being properly upheld by charitable organizations.

To the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS): Assist in reviewing the unauthorized removal of a community animal from our local waterway and support our efforts to ensure he is safely returned to his habitat.

To our Local State MP (Rockdale): Stand with your community of over 250+ constituents by advocating on our behalf directly to the Minister for Agriculture to ensure this regulatory failure is investigated and resolved.
