Urgent Appeal to Stop Demolition of Homes and Villages in Addis Ababa 4 Political Purposes
The Issue
Subject: Urgent Appeal to Stop the Demolition of Homes and Villages in Addis Ababa for Political Purposes
Dear Human Rights Organization/UN-HABITAT,
We, the undersigned residents Piassa/Arada sudcity of Addis Ababa, are writing to you with utmost urgency and deep concern regarding the imminent demolition of our homes and villages. We believe that this act of demolition is politically motivated and constitutes a gross violation of our fundamental human rights. Therefore, we humbly request your immediate intervention and support in opposing this unjust action.
Our homes and villages hold immense significance to us as they are not only places of residence but also repositories of our heritage, culture, and identity. However, the authorities have recently announced plans to demolish these areas, providing no valid justifications or offering viable alternatives for relocation.
We strongly believe that this demolition is driven by political motives, aimed at cleansing residents based on their ethnicity and eradicating communities that have been living in the area for more than 135 years. Such actions not only infringe upon our right to adequate housing but also flagrantly disregard our rights to life, diecent housing, and participation in decision-making processes.
As esteemed organization committed to the promotion and protection of human rights, we appeal to Organization to urgently intervene and take a stand against this grave violation. We kindly request the following actions:
1. Conduct an impartial investigation into the underlying motives behind this demolition and document any human rights abuses associated with it.
2. Issue public statements and reports to raise awareness about the situation and highlight the violations of our rights.
3. Engage with relevant stakeholders, including local authorities and international bodies, to advocate for the protection of our rights and the preservation of our communities.
4. Mobilize support from the international community, including other human rights organizations and the United Nations, to exert pressure on the authorities and halt the demolition.
Through your expertise, influence, and commitment to human rights, we believe that your organization can play a pivotal role in safeguarding our rights, preserving our homes, and ensuring justice and dignity for the residents of Piassa/Arada sub-city in Addis Ababa. Your involvement will not only provide immediate relief to our community but also send a resounding message against political oppression and human rights abuses.
Attached to this letter, you will find a copy of the petition signed by concerned residents of our city. We trust that you will give due attention to our appeal and take the necessary steps to address this urgent matter.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We eagerly await your positive response and actions to support our cause.
Sincerely,
concerned residents of Piassa/Arada AA
