We issue this united and urgent appeal calling for the immediate dismissal of the malicious and unfounded charges brought by the Sudanese State Security and Counter-Terrorism Prosecution against the renowned columnist, Ms. Sabah Mohamed Al-Hassan.

Ms. Al-Hassan faces grave accusations—including undermining the constitutional order, waging war against the state, inciting sedition, and publishing false information. The punishment of each one of these charges is so severe and two of them  carry the possibility of capital punishment. These allegations are not only baseless; they represent a dangerous and disproportionate weaponization of the law against peaceful journalistic expression.

For years, Ms. Al-Hassan has stood as a courageous voice for truth, justice, and the rights of ordinary citizens. Her writings have shed light on injustice, defended human dignity, and challenged abuse of power through responsible, balanced, and principled commentary. She is known solely for peaceful expression—through the written word, through reasoned opinion, and through unwavering professional integrity.

Criminalizing journalism and transforming opinion writing into a matter of “national security” marks a deeply alarming escalation in the suppression of press freedom. It sends a chilling message to every independent journalist, writer, and citizen who dares to speak truth to power. Such actions do not protect the state—they erode the rule of law and undermine public trust in judicial institutions by turning them into tools of political intimidation rather than guardians of justice.

Press freedom is not a privilege granted at the discretion of authority; it is an inherent right guaranteed by law, international conventions, and universal human principles. Any authority that silences free voices suffocates the nation’s future, because the free press remains the first line of defense for awareness, accountability, and dignity.

This case is not merely about one journalist. It is about the protection of fundamental freedoms. It is about whether a nation will be governed by fear or by justice. It is about whether the law will serve truth—or be used to suppress it.

We therefore:

Demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all charges against Ms. Sabah Mohamed Al-Hassan.
Call for an end to the misuse of security and counter-terrorism laws against journalists and peaceful writers.
Urge international human rights organizations, governments, media institutions, and civil society actors to closely monitor this case and hold the Sudanese authorities accountable for any acts of intimidation or repression.
Invite journalists, legal professionals, and defenders of freedom worldwide to stand in solidarity in defense of press freedom and the rule of law.
History has consistently shown that free voices cannot be extinguished through prosecution, and that truthful words outlast attempts at repression. A nation cannot be built by silencing its thinkers and writers; it can only be built through dialogue, justice, and respect for fundamental rights.
