But while we are supporting one life, millions are still struggling.
Right now in Gaza according to WHO:
• 1.6 million people (77% of the population) are facing acute food insecurity
• Over 100,000 people are in catastrophic hunger, at risk of death
• 800,000 children are affected by hunger
• 4 out of 5 children are in crisis
• Over 132,000 children under 5 are at risk of severe malnutrition
Fresh, nutritious food exists
but for most families, it has become a luxury. You have witnessed this struggle with Maryam's family first hand.
Market prices are sky high, driven by restrictions, limited supply, and overwhelming demand.
Agriculture has been largely destroyed.
Many families are surviving on basic staples, when available.
Maryam’s story is not just hers, it is Gaza’s reality.
Her family have made a decision.
We could not stop at saving one life.
They have now launched a grassroots, community-run kitchen and bakery in Gaza, led by local women and men and Maryam's family. Her family want to help those in their community who still require urgent help getting basic food and nutrition. We never want to see another child like the suffering Maryam went through last year, again. So...
Introducing: Al Mat’haf Kitchen
Its purpose is simple, but urgent:
to provide consistent, nourishing meals to those who need them most, and to prevent others from reaching the point Maryam once did.
This initiative is inspired by the Al Mat’haf Museum, located at the seafront of Gaza,
once a place that preserved Gaza’s history, now completely destroyed.
This is a large-scale initiative:
• Target: 6,000 meals every day
• Across 10 camps
• Supporting 2,000 families daily
