Urgent Action Required for Road and Community Safety in North Shore, Auckland

Urgent Action Required for Road and Community Safety in North Shore, Auckland
The issue
We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of Browns Bay, Torbay, Glenfield, Albany, and Mairangi Bay (North Shore, Auckland), respectfully request immediate action from the New Zealand Police and local authorities to address a pressing road safety issue that threatens the well-being of our community.
Issue at Hand:
For months, residents in Browns Bay, Glenfield, and surrounding areas have witnessed recurring incidents involving (we believe) a mentally unwell woman walking into the paths of moving vehicles. This behavior has created numerous near-miss situations on Browns Bay and Glenfield Roads, endangering the woman herself and the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
Despite repeated reports to the police and a prior petition submitted in April 2024, this hazardous situation remains unresolved. Social media discussions, including over 500 comments on community Facebook groups, document the ongoing risks and the community's growing concern.
Our Objectives:
- Ensure the individual receives proper care and support
- Our intent is not to criminalise the individual but to advocate for her mental and physical well-being through appropriate health care and support services.
- Guarantee public safety for all residents and commuters
Immediate action is required to prevent potential accidents, injuries, or fatalities resulting from the current inaction.
Our Requests:
- An urgent review of this case by the Police and collaboration with relevant health and social services to ensure a sustainable solution is implemented.
- Immediate intervention to safeguard the individual’s well-being while addressing the danger posed to motorists and pedestrians.
- Transparency in communication regarding the actions being taken, including the development of a comprehensive strategy to address similar issues in the future.
Why This Matters:
This situation not only jeopardises the safety of an individual in need of mental health care but also highlights systemic gaps in providing care to vulnerable individuals who may not recognise their own needs. If someone is mentally unwell, their ability to make informed decisions about accepting or refusing care is compromised.
As taxpayers and members of this community, we believe that public safety and compassionate care for vulnerable individuals are paramount. A coordinated response from the Police, health agencies, and local government is critical to address this immediate issue and prevent future tragedies.
Call to Action:
We urge the New Zealand Police and local authorities to act promptly, not only to protect this individual but also to ensure the safety of our community. Delayed action increases the likelihood of avoidable harm to all parties involved.
Let us work together to create a safer, more compassionate community. By signing this petition, we stand united in demanding swift and effective action.
