Urgent Action Needed to Address Dangers of Speeding on St Georges Road, Badshot Lea
The Issue
We, the residents of Badshot Lea, demand urgent action to tackle the reckless speeding epidemic on St George’s Road.
This is a 30mph residential road — but recent speed data paints a terrifying picture:
Over 80% of drivers are breaking the speed limit.
One vehicle was clocked at over 80mph — in broad daylight at 2pm.
On a single day, 23 vehicles flew past at 60mph+.
During the study, 42 vehicles hit speeds of 70mph or more.
This isn’t just speeding — it’s dangerous, illegal, and life-threatening.
All well as residents who have lived in the village for years, St George’s Road now serves three new housing estates, home to families and young children, that need to pull out into the highway. Every day, parents and toddlers must cross this road to reach The Kiln pre-school, the community garden and the village hall. With cars tearing through like it's a racetrack, it's a miracle no one’s been seriously hurt. Several cars have ended up in the ditch, and there are regular near misses along this stretch of road including extremely dangerous overtaking. Cyclists and horse riders are also at danger, and near misses were reported as recently as last week.
We call on Surrey County Council and Surrey Police to act now:
Install traffic calming measures — speed humps, chicanes, raised crossings.
Deploy speed cameras and increase enforcement.
Build safe pedestrian crossings, especially near The Kiln.
Launch a driver awareness campaign to restore respect for the 30mph limit.
This road is not a shortcut. It’s our neighbourhood. It’s where our children walk, play, and grow up. We won’t wait for tragedy to strike before something is done.
Slow it down. Make it safe. Act now.
