The Issue

During the COVID-19 lockdown, I, like many others, lost my access to an NHS dentist. I was promised a follow-up appointment, which never came. Due to their policy, anyone who doesn't attend an appointment within two years is removed from their list. This policy is particularly unjust given the circumstances, as it was beyond our control. This experience has been shared by numerous others, leaving us not only frustrated but also deeply concerned about our dental health.

The lack of accessible and affordable dental care from the NHS is a growing crisis in the UK. Many adults are losing their NHS dentist access due to budget constraints, and this is significantly affecting our quality of life. Dental health is not just a matter of aesthetics; it impacts our mental health, our ability to work, eat, and live comfortably. It is neither fair nor sustainable for hundreds of pounds to be the only way to ensure basic dental health.

We need the NHS to allocate appropriate funds to open more NHS dental practices that cater to adults, offering solutions such as payment plans, reduced costs, or even an annual fee that makes regular dental care attainable for everyone. According to the British Dental Association, nearly 1 in 10 people have attempted DIY dentistry because they cannot afford professional care (BDA, 2022). This is unacceptable in a developed nation.

Therefore, I urge the NHS and relevant government bodies to reconsider their strategies and to ensure that dental healthcare is fair and accessible for all, regardless of financial situation. Investing in dental health now will prevent greater health issues and costs in the future. Stand with me in demanding fair access to NHS dental services for everyone. Please sign this petition.
