URGENT ACTION AGAINST DEADLY FOOD ADULTERATION IN INDIA

URGENT ACTION AGAINST DEADLY FOOD ADULTERATION IN INDIA

The Issue

We, the people of India, urgently appeal for severe and sweeping action to end the spiraling crime of food adulteration—a deliberate act that is destroying lives and jeopardizing the nation's health security.

The Scale and Deliberate Nature of Food Adulteration (2024–2025)

Recent FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) data exposed an alarming trend: over 30% of food samples tested nationally in 2024-25 failed safety standards. In major states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, non-compliance rates for food safety climbed to between 20% and over 40%.

Gravely, adulteration is not accidental. It is an intentional, profit-driven crime enabled by weak enforcement, regulatory gaps, and a lack of strong deterrence. Investigative agencies—including the CBI—have reported repeated instances of organized rackets selling adulterated spices, milk, cooking oils, sweets, and even fruits and vegetables.

In April 2025, major metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai saw mass food seizures following the detection of banned chemicals (e.g., artificial ripening agents, pesticides, industrial dyes). These seizures alone prevented the distribution of food adulterated enough to potentially poison millions.

Common adulterants found include:

  • Calcium carbide and ethephon: For quick fruit ripening (linked to cancer, neurological disorders)
  • Formalin and detergent: In milk and paneer (cause of kidney, liver failure, and cancer)
  • Sudan dyes and heavy metals: In spices (classified carcinogens)
  • Pesticide residues: In vegetables, well above WHO limits (increases risk of leukemia, endocrine disorders)

Recent Central Forensic Science Laboratory reports (2025) and NCRB case statistics show a substantial rise in FIRs under food adulteration offenses, with public health emergencies triggered by adulterated products in at least eight states.

Human Cost: A Public Health Catastrophe

Estimated deaths: Peer-reviewed studies (2023–2025) in the Indian Journal of Public Health estimated over 120,000 deaths annually from direct or indirect causes related to food adulteration—including acute poisoning, cancers, and chronic organ failure.

Cancer and chronic disease: Rising rates of blood cancer, stomach/liver cancer, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes have been directly correlated with toxin-laden food and sustained chemical exposures (ICMR/WHO, 2025 reports).

Child health: National Family Health Survey (2025) and AIIMS studies confirm children exposed to contaminated food have stunted growth, less cognitive development, and compromised immunity.
These figures prove adulteration is not a petty economic offense, but a form of premeditated mass harm and homicide.

Legal and Social Urgency: Why Capital Punishment for Willful Adulteration?
Adulteration, especially at scale, meets all conditions for the gravest punishments: intent, mass impact, and lethal result.
The Supreme Court (2024 observations) underscored that food adulteration is a crime against humanity, recommending the legislature seriously consider doubling down on penalties, and in cases of death or grievous harm, capital punishment should be debated and permitted through special provisions.
Existing jail terms (max 7 years, rarely enforced) have failed to deter organized adulterators. Repeat offenders routinely reenter the supply chain, endangering millions.
Recommendation:

Capital punishment for willful, large-scale adulteration that directly causes death or lasting harm should be enacted, with special courts to fast-track such cases.

We urge national leaders and the Hon’ble Supreme Court to act decisively—food adulterators are not just cheats but murderers of our children and elders. Let 2047 be a year when every Indian confidently eats safe, pure, and nutritious food.

We respectfully request all citizens to endorse this petition so the government and judiciary recognize the urgency and scale of this preventable public health disaster.
