To our Members of Parliament, Local Leaders, and Policymakers,

I am writing to you as a 23 year old citizen who is deeply concerned about the trajectory of our country and our planet. We are facing an existential crisis, and the time for treating climate change as a distant, theoretical issue has long passed.

This June has made it unequivocally clear: we are living in an oven. With temperatures hitting 35°C to 37°C in parts of the UK, France reaching a staggering 43°C, and Spain peaking at over 36°C, the reality of El Niño and global warming is entirely undeniable. Yet, our government seems distracted,focusing on divisive culture wars, military escalation, and economic policies that stifle working people, rather than addressing the literal fires burning outside our doors. It feels as though we are trapped in a hostile, unlivable environment, expected to carry on with "business as usual" while the world burns.

Enough is enough. We cannot afford to entertain conspiracy theorists or those who use denial as an excuse for laziness. If we want a future for ourselves and our future children, we must implement drastic, unquestionable measures immediately.

I urge you to implement the following survival and sustainability mandates:

1. Universal, Affordable Indoor Cooling
Our Victorian-era housing stock was built to retain heat, which now turns our homes into dangerous heat traps. Air conditioning can no longer be viewed as a luxury; it is a public health necessity.

The government must partner with retailers and manufacturers to heavily subsidize AC units for households, driving the consumer cost down to an accessible rate (e.g., £40 per unit), supported by zero-interest installment plans.

Simultaneously, energy bills must be radically capped or restructured so that citizens can actually afford to run these units without facing financial ruin.

It must be a mandatory, free-of-charge requirement for all hospitals, care homes, schools, and essential workplaces to be fitted with functioning, high-quality air conditioning.

2. Extreme Heat Labour and Education Protections
We cannot force people to commute and work in dangerous conditions.

Legislation must be passed stating that if temperatures reach 33°C, mandatory work-from-home protocols are triggered.

For jobs where remote work is impossible, and for all primary and secondary schools, 33°C must trigger a mandatory closure/heat-day, allowing workers and students to return home safely without penalty or loss of pay.

3. Climate-Resilient Public Infrastructure
Our public spaces and transport networks are currently unfit for extreme heat.

All public transit, including older buses and new electric fleets, must be retrofitted with robust, functioning AC systems.

Local councils must install outdoor cooling infrastructure, including heavy-duty misting fans in public parks, high streets, and shopping centres.

For those who simply cannot cool their homes, local governments must establish free "cooling centres"—utilizing large public spaces, halls, or subsidized hotel spaces—where vulnerable people can sleep, rest, and escape the dangerous heat.

4. Accelerating the Green Transition
We must address the root cause of this crisis while adapting to its symptoms.

Electric vehicles (EVs) must be made drastically cheaper and more accessible to the average person, regardless of the economic complexities involved. The transition away from fossil fuels needs to be economically viable for the working class, not just the wealthy.

We need immediate government grants to retrofit homes, ensuring they are properly insulated to keep heat out during the summer and in during the winter.

5. Civic Responsibility and Waste Management
Finally, as citizens, we must hold ourselves accountable. The government must launch stern, unapologetic campaigns regarding recycling and waste management. There must be zero tolerance for littering, and strict, clear guidance on proper bin usage. We need to foster a culture that takes environmental stewardship seriously at the neighborhood level.

We are living in dire times. This isn't just about comfort; it is about survival. I am asking you to shift your priorities away from political theatre and toward the immediate preservation of our communities.

We need systemic change, and we need it now. I look forward to hearing your concrete plans to address these demands.
