YouTube's latest terms require creators to garner 10 million views on Shorts within a 90-day period to qualify for monetization. This steep threshold essentially strips away any opportunity for small and emerging creators to earn a living from their content. For those of us who rely on this revenue to make ends meet, this policy feels like a direct threat to our livelihood.
The reality is, small creators bring diversity and innovation to the platform. They are the lifeblood of unique and niche content, which not only enriches YouTube but also keeps viewers engaged and interested. By enforcing such an unrealistic standard, YouTube risks losing these vibrant voices that make the platform so distinctive.
Consider the statistics: only a fraction of creators can actually achieve the 10 million views milestone in such a short time frame. Most creators do not have the budget or reach to compete with large channels, whose established footholds on the platform allow them to easily meet and surpass such metrics.
Our proposed solution is simple and fair: YouTube should lower the Shorts monetization threshold to a more attainable level. Additionally, revisiting the distribution of ad revenue to be more equitable can ensure that all creators, regardless of size, have the chance to benefit from their hard work.
