The decision by Wiltshire Council to move household waste collections from a fortnightly schedule to every three weeks has raised concerns for many of us. This change represents a 33.3% reduction in waste collection frequency, which will disproportionately impact households with large families or those with infants and young children. These families will be required to store potentially hazardous unrecyclable waste for extended periods, which is not only inconvenient but also poses health risks.

Furthermore, the introduction of a booking system at Council recycling centres adds another layer of complexity. Previously, residents could visit these centres as needed, ensuring that we responsibly manage our waste. A booking system introduces unnecessary bureaucracy, potentially leading to longer waiting times and logistical challenges, further discouraging residents from using the facilities.

For context, other councils facing similar challenges have maintained more frequent waste collection schedules or have implemented systems that do not hinder public access to recycling facilities. We appreciate the financial and environmental pressures that the council faces. However, cutting back on essential services should not be the solution. Instead, we propose that Wiltshire Council explores alternative strategies, such as community composting initiatives or pilot programs that enhance current recycling efforts without reducing the essential services relied upon by its residents.
