Urge Wayne State University to Retain Part-Time Arts Staff/Reevaluate Budget Cuts

Urge Wayne State University to Retain Part-Time Arts Staff/Reevaluate Budget Cuts
The Issue
As a dance minor and social work student at Wayne State University, I understand and deeply value the cultural and academic significance of a comprehensive and versatile education. This philosophy is now threatened by the university's decision to let go of various part-time staff members in the arts and dance programs due to budget restraints. This move endangers the existence of certain programs, particularly tap dance, disproportionately impacting the overall arts education quality.
Our education system should prioritize the cultivation of creative expression, the historical understanding of artistic influences, and the production of diverse educational experiences. The proposed cuts will significantly limit these objectives, delivering a major blow to the rich fabric of our university's culture and our students' academic growth.
Moreover, these cuts will directly affect both dance and musical theatre students. Tap dance and other impacted programs play an essential role in the overall education of these students, just as much as any academic subject does.
Lastly, the dedication and expertise of these part-time staff members are paramount, and losing them will lead to the decline in the overall qualifications of students in the arts programs.
We strongly urge Wayne State University to reconsider its budget cuts, and prioritize the maintenance of our diverse, comprehensive, and high-standard arts program. Please sign this petition to stand with us in support of education, arts, and our future creative trailblazers!
Keep Nia Silao as a core professor at WSU!
